India’s Tourism Set to Soar: 2024 Projections Revealed

The Indian tourism sector is poised for remarkable growth in 2024, with projections indicating nearly 99.52 lakh foreign tourist arrivals (FTAs) and an impressive 29,481.91 lakh domestic tourist visits (DTVs). These figures highlight the country’s ongoing appeal as a vibrant travel destination, drawing in millions of travelers from around the globe.

According to data released by the Bureau of Immigration and the State/UT Tourism Departments, the Foreign Exchange Earnings (FEEs) from tourism in India are expected to reach approximately ₹2,93,033 crore in 2024. This impressive financial inflow reflects the nation’s appeal to both foreign and domestic tourists, contributing significantly to the economy.

Tourist Arrivals Insights by Quarter

Looking more closely at the year, the first two quarters reveal considerable activity in international tourism. In the first quarter, spanning January to March, India welcomed 26.15 lakh foreign tourists, followed by 16.48 lakh in the second quarter, culminating in a total of 42.63 lakh FTAs for the first half of the year. This steady influx demonstrates an ongoing recovery and interest from travelers worldwide.

Top Source Countries for Foreign Tourists

A deeper dive into the statistics showcases which countries are fueling this tourism boom. The United States leads the pack, with 18,04,586 visitors expected in 2024. Following closely behind are Bangladesh and the United Kingdom, with 17,50,165 and 10,22,587 arrivals respectively. Other notable contributors include Australia with 5,18,205 visitors, and Canada, bringing in 4,76,273 tourists.

The increasing number of e-visas issued also signals a growing inclination towards travel to India. Between November 1, 2024, and November 30, 2025, a total of 31.74 lakh e-visas were granted, facilitating easier access for tourists eager to experience India’s rich culture, heritage, and diverse landscapes.

This promising outlook for India’s tourism was shared by Union Minister for Tourism and Culture, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, during a session in the Rajya Sabha, underlining the government’s commitment to enhancing the travel experience for both international and domestic visitors.
