India’s PC market experienced a robust year-over-year growth of 3.8% in 2024, according to a recent report from market research firm IDC. Strong Growth Across Categories

The IDC report highlights that the overall PC shipments in India rose to 14.4 million units in 2024, marking a 3.8% increase compared to the previous year. Notebooks saw a notable growth of 4.5%, while desktop shipments grew by 1.8%. The workstation segment outperformed all others, recording an impressive growth rate of 10.9%. In the fourth quarter of 2024 alone, the market expanded by 6.9%, largely fueled by a 9.6% increase in notebook sales. Premium notebooks, in particular, experienced a significant boost, with shipments rising by 13.8%. The consumer segment grew by 2.6%, while the commercial sector saw a 5.1% increase. Notably, enterprise and government segments reported a robust growth of 10.6% during the same period.

Leading Players in the Market

HP dominated the Indian PC market in 2024, capturing a 30.1% market share. The company saw substantial growth in its government and enterprise segments, which increased by 14.7% and 14.3%, respectively. However, HP’s consumer segment faced challenges, declining by 7.5% due to heightened competition, particularly in the eTailer channel. Lenovo secured the second position with a 17.2% market share, achieving growth in both consumer and commercial segments, which rose by 7% and 7.4%, respectively. Dell followed closely in third place with a 16.1% market share, while Acer claimed fourth with a 15.1% share, experiencing the highest growth among the top five vendors at 48.4% in the consumer segment. Asus rounded out the top five with a 7% market share, bolstered by a strong presence in the commercial sector, which grew by 18.4% year-over-year.

Future Outlook and Challenges

According to IDC Research Manager Bharath Shenoy, the consumer PC market is on an upward trajectory, largely driven by the popularity of gaming and AI-powered devices. Since mid-2024, there has been a significant increase in shipments of AI-powered notebooks, particularly those utilizing Intel Core Ultra and AMD Ryzen AI processors. Navkendar Singh, Associate Vice President of Devices Research at IDC India, attributes the growth in the commercial PC market to healthy refresh order books and increased public sector purchasing. He anticipates a rise in replacement demand as devices purchased in 2020-21 reach the end of their typical lifespan. However, challenges such as a weakening rupee could lead to higher device costs, potentially impacting price-sensitive small and medium-sized businesses and consumers. The report forecasts modest single-digit growth for the Indian PC market in 2025.
