India’s One Health Mission Strengthened at Key Committee Meeting
The Scientific Steering Committee on One Health convened for its fourth meeting on December 18, 2025, at Kartavya Bhavan 3 in New Delhi, with the aim of enhancing the National One Health Mission (NOHM). Chaired by Prof. Ajay K. Sood, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, the meeting brought together representatives from over 16 ministries, departments, and key stakeholders focused on addressing health challenges involving humans, animals, and the environment.
The NOHM represents a collaborative nationwide initiative aimed at promoting health across multiple sectors. It emphasizes a whole-of-society approach, engaging various governmental and scientific bodies, including the Department of Health Research, the Indian Council of Medical Research, and the Indian Space Research Organisation, among others.
Collaborative Efforts Recognized
During the meeting, attendees, including Dr. Rajiv Bahl from the Department of Health, Dr. Parvinder Maini from the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser, and representatives from various ministries, reviewed the progress of the mission. Prof. Sood noted the success of the National One Health Assembly, which raised significant awareness and engaged a diverse audience, including youth. He emphasized the need for sustained youth involvement through structured initiatives.
Furthermore, Prof. Sood highlighted the global impact of the One Health approach, particularly during discussions at the 50th anniversary of the Biological Weapons Convention, attended by over 80 countries. This international recognition underscores the mission’s relevance in bolstering resilience against health challenges.
Framework for Future Implementation
The meeting also marked the introduction of a new model governance framework aimed at facilitating sub-national implementation of the One Health approach across India. This framework aims to enhance coordination between the Central and State/Union Territory governments, ensuring a more effective response to health challenges.
The Chairs of four advisory committees provided updates on current progress, challenges faced, and priority areas within the One Health framework. The committee also agreed to establish a One Health Genomics Consortium similar to INSACOG, reinforcing its commitment to scientific innovation and collaborative solutions.
