Indian Railways Upgrades Signalling Systems for Safer Travel

In a significant move aimed at enhancing railway safety and modernizing its infrastructure, Indian Railways has approved a ₹274 crore project to replace outdated relay-based interlocking systems with advanced Electronic Interlocking (EI) technology. This upgrade will take place at 20 locations within the Malda Division of Eastern Railway, including 18 railway stations and 2 Intermediate Block Signalling (IBS) sites situated along the crucial High Utilisation Network (HUN) routes.

Transforming Signalling Infrastructure on Busy Routes

This initiative represents a major upgrade of conventional signalling systems to state-of-the-art Electronic Interlocking technology across key operational areas in the Malda Division. The project targets high-density routes known for heavy passenger and freight traffic, ensuring that the railway infrastructure keeps pace with growing demand.

Enhanced Safety and Reliability for Train Operations

Electronic Interlocking introduces advanced fail-safe technology that automates crucial functions like route setting and signalling. This innovation drastically reduces the risk of equipment failures and minimizes human error. As a result, train services will experience increased operational flexibility, fewer service disruptions, and quicker recovery in case of faults, which collectively enhance punctuality and overall service quality.

This project will not only bolster train safety but will also improve efficiency in operational processes, supporting faster and more reliable train movement on busy routes. Moreover, it lays the groundwork for the future integration of advanced technologies, such as the Kavach system, alongside other modern signalling solutions.

The approval of this project underscores Indian Railways’ commitment to modernizing its signalling infrastructure across the national network. By investing in advanced technologies, the railways aim to ensure safer, smarter, and more efficient operations for passengers and freight services alike.
