Indian Railways Plans Major Flyover to Boost Freight Capacity
In a pivotal move to enhance freight capacity and operational efficiency, Indian Railways has given the green light for the construction of a 4.59 km rail flyover connecting Bondamunda ‘A’ Cabin to Bondamunda Link ‘B’ Cabin in the South Eastern Railway zone, with a budget of ₹135 crore. This project aims to alleviate congestion along the crucial Rourkela-Bondamunda section, a vital industrial corridor experiencing unprecedented growth in freight traffic spurred by the booming mining and steel sectors.
Building for Future Growth
The Rourkela-Bondamunda segment is projected to see a significant surge in freight movement. This uptick is fueled by the expansion plans of SAIL’s Barsua-Taldih-Kalta mining complex and increased production capabilities at the Rourkela Steel Plant. Additionally, the initiative aligns with the strategy to double this High-Density Network (HDN) route, further preparing for the anticipated rise in rail traffic.
Improving Efficiency and Reducing Congestion
The new rail flyover is designed to separate heavy freight operations from passenger services. This segregation will greatly decrease congestion within the Bondamunda Yard, thereby enhancing overall line capacity and operational efficiency. Improvements in train reliability and network performance on this key industrial freight corridor are also expected.
Once operational, the flyover is anticipated to accommodate an extra 8 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA) of freight traffic. This development will strengthen the transportation of minerals and industrial goods, supporting further growth in freight logistics across the region.
Support for Industrial Development
This project falls under the Indian Railways’ Energy, Mineral and Cement Corridor initiative, emphasizing the national commitment to bolster rail infrastructure. By facilitating faster freight movement and improving logistics efficiency, the project is expected to play a vital role in supporting India’s industrial development goals.
