Indian Envoy to UK Highlights Economic Impact of Strait of Hormuz Disruption Amid Iran Conflict

India has strongly condemned the recent attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, labeling them as “unacceptable.” This statement came during the 36th extraordinary session of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council held in London, where India’s ambassador to the UK, Vikram Doraiswamy, emphasized the need for coordinated action to protect civilian vessels in the Gulf region. He expressed New Delhi’s commitment to maritime security and the safety of seafarers, while also calling for de-escalation through dialogue and diplomacy.

India’s Commitment to Maritime Security

During the IMO Council session, Ambassador Doraiswamy highlighted India’s dedication to ensuring maritime security and the freedom of navigation. He expressed deep concern over the ongoing situation in the region, particularly the impact of such attacks on innocent lives, including the loss of three Indian seafarers. Doraiswamy stated, “Targeting of commercial shipping and attacks on civilian maritime infrastructure is unacceptable.” He underscored that these incidents not only endanger lives but also pose heightened risks to seafarers, a significant concern for India, which supplies approximately 13 percent of the global seafaring workforce.

To address these challenges, India has established a 24/7 helpline for affected seafarers and operates the Information Fusion Centre, Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR), which plays a crucial role in coordinating rescue efforts and sharing vital information. The ambassador reiterated the importance of respecting navigational rights and freedoms in accordance with international law, emphasizing that the safety of civilian crews must be prioritized.

Significance of the Strait of Hormuz

Ambassador Doraiswamy also pointed out the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz for India, stating that the country’s energy security and trade heavily rely on safe passage through this vital waterway. He warned that any disruption or obstruction in the Strait could have direct repercussions on India’s economy and global energy supply chains. Currently, there are 24 Indian-flagged vessels operating in the Persian Gulf, with 611 Indian seafarers aboard vessels west of the Strait and 47 on those to the east.

The ambassador’s remarks reflect a broader concern regarding the stability of maritime routes in the region, particularly as tensions rise due to ongoing conflicts. The Strait of Hormuz is a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments, making its security paramount not only for India but for many nations reliant on energy imports.

International Response and Call for Action

The IMO Council has taken a firm stance against threats to maritime safety, condemning attacks on merchant vessels and attempts to close the Strait of Hormuz. Citing UN Security Council Resolution 2817, the Council adopted a decision to encourage the establishment of a maritime safety corridor aimed at facilitating the voluntary evacuation of ships from high-risk areas. This initiative underscores the need for an internationally coordinated approach to maritime security.

The IMO Secretary-General emphasized the urgency for decisive action, stating, “Let it be the responsibility of each and every one of us to demonstrate that inaction is not an option.” He called for collective efforts to protect the well-being of those affected by these maritime threats and to uphold the principle of freedom of navigation. The session was attended by representatives from over 120 member states, highlighting the global concern regarding maritime safety in the Gulf region.

As the situation continues to evolve, the international community remains vigilant, recognizing that the safety of maritime routes is essential for global trade and energy supply chains.
