Indian Delegation Highlights Climate Action and Governance in IPU Assembly
During the 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) held in Arusha, Tanzania, Indian officials actively participated in critical discussions concerning climate-related disasters and governance. The Indian delegation, led by Shri Harivansh, Hon’ble Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, engaged in a debate on an urgent item proposed by Nepal aimed at enhancing resilience in the Himalayan region and other vulnerable areas. This item was officially adopted on the third day of the assembly.
Dr. Anurag Singh Thakur, a Lok Sabha Member of Parliament (MP), voiced India’s support for the emergency item during the debate. Following this, he contributed to the Bureau of the Standing Committee on Democracy and Human Rights, where he outlined India’s stance on prospective topics for the committee’s future resolutions. His efforts culminated in the successful adoption of a relevant resolution.
Meanwhile, Dr. Sasmit Patra, also an MP in the Rajya Sabha, played an integral role in the Standing Committee on United Nations Affairs. He participated in an engaging panel discussion focused on the United Nations’ mechanisms for conflict prevention and resolution. Additionally, he attended the hearing process for candidates vying for the position of IPU President, which is due to be elected on October 9, 2026, coinciding with the assembly’s closing day.
Furthermore, Dr. Lata Wankhede, a Lok Sabha MP, participated in the Standing Committee on Sustainable Development, where she engaged in a discussion concerning the impact of artificial intelligence on the future of work. These dialogues reflect the Indian delegation’s commitment to addressing pressing global issues.
The Secretary-General of the Rajya Sabha took part in the Association of Secretaries General of Parliaments (ASGP) meeting, where an informal session was held regarding parliamentary funding and budget allocation processes. He informed attendees about the financial procedures utilized by the Indian Parliament, showcasing transparency and governance.
In a significant outcome of the assembly, Mr. Milton Dick, the Speaker of the House of Representatives of Australia, was elected as the President of the IPU on October 9, 2026. Following the announcement, Shri Harivansh and the Indian delegation congratulated Mr. Dick, extending their best wishes for a fruitful term as the IPU President.
