India Showcases Solar Leadership at WEF Davos 2026
Shri Pradip Kumar Das, the Chairman and Managing Director of the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency Ltd. (IREDA), took part in an insightful panel discussion at the World Economic Forum (WEF) 2026 in Davos. The session focused on “Scaling Solar Where It Matters: India’s Lessons on Rooftop, Agriculture and Decentralized Energy for the Global South,” highlighting India’s commitment to advancing solar energy solutions.
Earlier in the day, Shri Pralhad Joshi, the Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, delivered a keynote address that underscored India’s leadership in the solar sector. He emphasized that India’s experiences can offer valuable insights into inclusive and sustainable development through solar energy. The discussion showcased how decentralized renewable energy can boost system efficiency and reduce governmental subsidies and aggregate technical and commercial (AT&C) losses, ultimately lowering costs and enhancing affordability.
IREDA’s Role in India’s Renewable Future
During the panel discussion, Shri Das highlighted the importance of effective project design and risk management in renewable energy. Despite facing challenges in emerging segments, IREDA has managed to maintain a remarkably low cumulative write-off of only ₹149 crore over its 38 years, having financed around ₹1.81 lakh crore. This achievement reflects the agency’s robust appraisal and monitoring systems.
Shri Das also pointed out that IREDA finances between 70% and 80% of project costs for initiatives like the Rooftop Solar scheme and PM-KUSUM, playing a crucial role in expanding clean energy access to rural regions across India.
A Platform for India’s Renewable Energy Showcase
Expressing gratitude to Minister Joshi for the opportunity at WEF, Shri Das remarked that the forum served as a prime platform to showcase India’s renewable energy growth, backed by a mature ecosystem. He noted that IREDA’s significant contributions are vital in steering the nation towards a sustainable energy transition.
He further emphasized that India’s experiences and institutional framework could provide valuable lessons for other countries on their own journeys to renewable energy adoption. Highlighting Maharashtra’s advancements in agricultural solarisation, Shri Das stressed the necessity of creating an enabling ecosystem. This ecosystem would help de-risk the sector and attract long-term global investments.
