India Marks First Organic Palmyra Jaggery Export to Bulgaria
The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, has officially facilitated the debut export of 1.755 metric tons of organic Palmyra Jaggery Powder from Gobichettipalayam in Erode district, Tamil Nadu, to Varna, Bulgaria, on October 15, 2026. This significant shipment represents a vital step in promoting India’s traditional Palmyra products on an international scale.
Boosting Organic Exports
The Palmyra Jaggery Powder, which has received NPOP and EU certification, is produced by M/s Wellbeing Foods, Erode, in collaboration with M/s Chetty Exports Private Limited, Chennai. The consignment is set to be shipped via Chennai Port, with M/s Sow Life Ltd, Bulgaria, as the overseas importer and distributor.
Economic Benefits for Local Farmers
This initiative aims to strengthen market connections for Tamil Nadu’s Palmyra products, providing new opportunities for local organic farmers. Currently, 137 acres are cultivated organically, and the initiative promises improved market accessibility and the establishment of export-oriented value chains. Farmers can expect price realisations of approximately 15-22% higher than domestic rates, while manufacturers may see an increase of around 17%, enhancing income potential and promoting sustainable livelihoods.
Health and Cultural Significance
Palmyra Jaggery Powder is more than just a sweetener; it is a traditional Indian product derived from the nectar of Palmyra blossoms. It is known for its nutritional benefits, including essential vitamins and minerals, positioning it as a healthier alternative to refined sugar. This unique product aligns with traditional agricultural practices that define Tamil Nadu’s cultural landscape, thus promoting both economic and cultural sustainability.
The Flag-Off Ceremony
Chairman of APEDA, Shri Abhishek Dev, had the honor of flagging off this first consignment, accompanied by Secretary of APEDA, Dr. Saswati Bose, along with senior officials and representatives of the exporting firms. The event also included progressive farmers and stakeholders from the export value chain, emphasizing a collaborative approach to enhancing India’s agricultural export capacity.
Future Prospects
APEDA is committed to fostering the export of certified organic and value-added agricultural products, which includes aiding market development and ensuring quality compliance. The successful export of Palmyra Jaggery Powder to Bulgaria not only opens doors to further market expansion but also reinforces the global presence of India’s traditional agricultural products.
