Reliance Embraces Competition, Including Starlink, as Jio Prepares for Satellite Services Pending Government Approval

NEW DELHI: Reliance Industries has welcomed Elon Musk’s Starlink to India, asserting that it is unafraid of competition and that its own satellite services are awaiting approval. This response follows Musk’s allegations that vested interests are hindering Starlink’s entry into the Indian market. Reliance emphasized that all companies must adhere to Indian laws and regulations, with a commitment to serving the public.

In a statement released on Friday, Reliance highlighted that India’s investment landscape is open to both domestic and foreign players, with the same regulatory processes applicable to all applicants. The company stated, “Like every Indian enterprise, Reliance has grown in an India that welcomes investment and innovation, homegrown or international, that improve the lives of the people.” It reiterated that Jio’s satellite services are pending necessary clearances.

Reliance further noted, “At Reliance, we have never feared competition. We see it as the truest test of who serves the customer best.” The telecom firm pointed out that Jio entered India’s telecom market in 2016 with no customers and has since gained over 530 million users, providing affordable data and robust digital infrastructure. Reliance welcomed competition in satellite communications, including Starlink, while insisting that all players must comply with local laws.

Musk accuses Reliance of opposing Starlink’s entry

Musk’s accusations against Reliance stem from claims that the Indian conglomerate benefits from the current market structure. He criticized arguments against Starlink’s entry as contradictory, stating, “The ridiculous arguments by Ambani’s army of Internet shills make no sense.” Musk argued that while some claim Starlink could not compete with Reliance’s low prices, they also suggest that Starlink would be too strong a competitor.

He maintained that increased competition would benefit Indian consumers by providing more choices, even if it impacted the profits of existing players. Musk previously alleged monopolistic practices in India’s telecommunications market and questioned the regulatory barriers facing Starlink. In a direct address to the government, he sarcastically referred to Prime Minister Modi as “Prime Minister Ambani,” suggesting that Reliance’s influence was stifling competition.

Government asks Starlink to comply with law

Union communications minister Jyotiraditya Scindia stated that there is no intention to allow a monopoly in satellite communications. He noted that three entities are awaiting final approval for commercial licenses. Scindia mentioned that India is nearing a decision on the pricing framework for satellite communication services, emphasizing that all licensed operators, including Starlink, must meet security requirements before commencing operations.

Starlink has yet to receive clearance to launch its services in India due to its failure to comply with regulations requiring satellite internet providers to establish domestic infrastructure. The government has indicated that it would allow Starlink to roll out services once it addresses security concerns and agrees to set up local base stations. These base stations are essential for connecting end-user devices to a wireless network and ensuring compliance with legal requirements. Reliance Jio, Eutelsat OneWeb, and Starlink are the three entities planning to launch satellite communication services in India.
