India Leads Global Effort to Combat Rising Wildfire Threats

During the 7th Session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7) in Nairobi, Kenya, India’s resolution on ‘Strengthening the Global Management of Wildfires’ received overwhelming support from Member States. This landmark resolution highlights the urgent need for enhanced international cooperation to tackle the growing menace of wildfires across the globe.

India’s delegation emphasized that wildfires have become one of the most significant environmental challenges, transforming from seasonal occurrences into frequent and intensified disasters. With climate change, increasing temperatures, prolonged droughts, and human activities at the forefront, wildfires now threaten ecosystems, livelihoods, and economies worldwide.

Each year, wildfires devastate millions of hectares of land, resulting in severe damage to forests, biodiversity, and vital natural resources. The air quality deteriorates, greenhouse gas emissions surge, and communities reliant on forests face dire consequences. India’s pressing warning cites a report by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), which predicts a staggering rise in wildfires—14% by 2030, 30% by 2050, and 50% by the end of the century unless current trends change.

To address this critical situation, the resolution calls for a proactive approach to wildfire management, advocating for better planning, early-warning systems, and risk reduction strategies. India pointed to the importance of Integrated Fire Management, which focuses on early warning mechanisms, risk mapping, and satellite monitoring, achieved through collaboration with local communities and emergency personnel.

Recognizing the vital role of UNEP, India urged countries to enhance their fire management strategies and improve ecosystem restoration efforts. The establishment of the Global Fire Management Hub in 2023 by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and UNEP was noted as an essential initiative for amplifying global cooperation in wildfire management.

Key Aspects of the Resolution

The resolution lays out crucial provisions to bolster ongoing global activities under the Global Fire Management Hub, including:

  • Strengthened International Cooperation: Enhancing early warning systems, developing risk assessment tools, and fostering community-based alert mechanisms.
  • Enhanced Regional and Global Collaboration: Establishing protocols for prevention, recovery, and ecosystem restoration.
  • Knowledge Sharing and Capacity Building: Creating platforms for sharing best practices and comprehensive training programs for stakeholders.
  • Support for National and Regional Action Plans: Assisting Member States in the formulation and implementation of integrated fire management and resilience strategies.
  • Facilitating Access to International Finance: Helping Member States prepare funding proposals through multilateral channels and performance-based schemes.

India reiterated its commitment to collaborating closely with UNEP and international partners to improve global preparedness, prevention, and resilience against intensifying wildfire risks.
