India Launches Indigenous Tetanus and Diphtheria Vaccine
Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Shri J.P. Nadda, proudly announced the launch of an indigenously manufactured Tetanus and Adult Diphtheria (Td) vaccine at the Central Research Institute (CRI) in Kasauli, Himachal Pradesh. In a significant stride towards enhancing national health security, Minister Nadda described this event as both momentous and historic, emphasizing the government’s commitment to strengthening the public health infrastructure under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.
Self-Reliance in Health Sector
During his address, Minister Nadda reiterated the government’s clear targets for achieving self-reliance in the health and pharmaceutical sectors. The introduction of the Td vaccine is a tangible manifestation of the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision in health and medicine. The vaccine will be available under the Universal Immunization Programme (UIP), with CRI set to supply 5.5 million doses by April 2026, increasing production in subsequent years to bolster India’s immunization efforts.
India’s Global Vaccine Leadership
He highlighted India’s status as the “pharmacy of the world,” noting its ranking among the world’s leading vaccine manufacturers. India has achieved Maturity Level 3 in the World Health Organization’s global benchmarking of regulatory systems, thanks to institutions like CRI. This reflects the robust nature of India’s vaccine regulatory framework, which has made remarkable strides over the years.
A Leap in Vaccine Development
Minister Nadda discussed the historical context of vaccine development timelines, contrasting them with the rapid pace of India’s response during the COVID-19 pandemic. While traditional vaccines took decades to develop, India successfully created two indigenous vaccines within nine months and administered over 2.2 billion doses. He noted the digitalization of vaccination certificates as a significant component of India’s public health transformation.
Global Solidarity Through Vaccine Maitri
Under the Vaccine Maitri initiative, India provided vaccines to nearly 100 countries, with 48 receiving them at no cost. Minister Nadda emphasized the CRI’s critical role in enhancing India’s capacity to meet both domestic and global vaccine needs. CRI stands as the first government institute to manufacture vaccines adhering to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), showcasing a revitalization of public sector manufacturing.
Universal Immunization Programme and Health Coverage
Highlighting the UIP, Minister Nadda called it the world’s largest immunization initiative, currently covering 11 vaccines against 12 diseases. Each year, approximately 5 crore beneficiaries, including 2.5 crore pregnant women and children, are accommodated under this program. The government’s tracking systems ensure comprehensive monitoring of beneficiaries from pregnancy through childhood immunization, achieving nearly 99 percent vaccine coverage across the nation.
Strengthening Maternal and Child Health Services
The Minister pointed out that institutional deliveries have risen sharply, reflecting improved maternal health services and access to healthcare facilities. He praised ongoing policy interventions that demonstrate how effective governance can lead to significant public health improvements.
Senior officials from the Ministry of Health, state representatives, public health experts, and CRI stakeholders attended the historic launch event, marking a pivotal moment in India’s journey towards enhanced health security.
