India Launches First Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vessel in Varanasi

Varanasi is gearing up for a significant leap in sustainable inland water transport as Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, is set to inaugurate the commercial operations of the nation’s inaugural indigenous hydrogen fuel cell vessel on December 11 at Namo Ghat. This momentous event marks a pivotal step in India’s commitment to cleaner and more efficient transportation options.
The launch ceremony will see the presence of several prominent leaders from the Uttar Pradesh government, including Transport Minister Dayashankar Singh, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Ayush, Food Security, and Drug Administration, Dr. Daya Shankar Mishra ‘Dayalu’, along with Shri Ravindra Jaiswal, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Stamp and Court Fee Registration. Additionally, members of the Legislative Assembly and Varanasi Mayor Ashok Kumar Tiwari will also be in attendance.
Boosting Green Transport Initiatives
This initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for the modernization of India’s inland waterways, which emphasizes cleaner transport, improved connectivity, and enhanced public convenience. Over the past few years, the Indian government, along with the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), has made significant strides, including the expansion of navigation channels, creation of modern terminals, and the introduction of new passenger and cargo routes aimed at reducing logistics costs.
In a statement preceding the launch, Sonowal highlighted the transformative approach spearheaded by Modi, crediting him with reshaping India’s infrastructure through modernization focused on public welfare. He stated, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been the change-maker who transformed India’s development landscape with modern infrastructure that enhances public welfare and convenience. Modiji’s vision for a clean, efficient and future-oriented waterways network is turning rivers into engines of growth and mobility.”
A Commitment to Sustainable Innovation
Sonowal underscored that this groundbreaking step underscores India’s commitment to adopt state-of-the-art, eco-friendly technology that will define the future of green transport. He said, “In the timeless spiritual capital of India, this advanced green transport will enhance the experience of people and pilgrims who arrive here from across the world, allowing them to move along the holy ghats with greater convenience, dignity and comfort.”
The launch at Namo Ghat elevates Varanasi to a significant position within India’s green waterways initiative, paving the way for a more sustainable transport future on rivers and inland routes. This effort reflects long-term strategic frameworks such as the Maritime India Vision 2030 (MIV 2030) and Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047 (MAKV 2047), which focus on greener transport, smart infrastructure, and increasing the use of alternative fuels in inland waterways.
With the unveiling of this hydrogen fuel cell vessel, Varanasi is poised to take a leading role in the evolution of sustainable transportation in India, marking a new chapter in eco-conscious water transport.
