India Expands NavIC Adoption Across Multiple Sectors
The Indian Department of Space (DoS) is actively working to enhance the use of the Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC) system across various sectors. The focus on NavIC includes initiatives such as pilot projects, technology transfer to Indian industries, and offering technical and testing support. Through these efforts, DoS aims to establish NavIC as a standard in both national and international industries, ensuring its seamless integration into a variety of products and solutions.
Currently, over 60 smartphones from various manufacturers support the NavIC system. Pilot projects being developed are set to broaden the applications of NavIC, showcasing its versatility and capability in modern technology.
Innovative Applications of NavIC
Among the key applications of NavIC are real-time train tracking, which has equipped more than 10,000 trains with NavIC-enabled tracking devices. Additionally, the fishing industry is benefiting from NavIC with more than 30,000 vessels fitted with NavIC-enabled transponders for precise monitoring. The utilisation of NavIC in tracking public and commercial vehicles is also significant, with over 140 certified device models installed in more than 1.5 million vehicles across the country.
Furthermore, the establishment of secondary time scales is being facilitated through NavIC time transfer receivers, ensuring uniform Indian Standard Time (IST) across the nation. Despite these advancements, the government has not yet mandated the use of NavIC. Ongoing discussions are exploring the potential for making NavIC a compulsory navigation system.
A Collaborative Effort
NavIC civilian signals remain accessible to all users within its coverage, allowing them to leverage its Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) capabilities. The DoS is also maintaining regular interactions and collaborations with international GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) service providers to ensure compatibility and signal coordination with NavIC. This international cooperation aims to enhance the overall effectiveness and reliability of NavIC services.
Through these comprehensive initiatives, the Department of Space is aiming to not only strengthen India’s navigation capabilities but also promote wider acceptance and use of NavIC in various sectors, thereby setting a foundation for future advancements in satellite-based navigation solutions.
