India Crosses 500,000 km in Power Transmission Network
India has reached a major milestone in its power transmission capabilities, surpassing 500,000 circuit kilometers (ckm) of transmission lines operating at 220 kV and above. This achievement includes a substantial transformation capacity of 1,407 GVA, signifying the importance of the country’s national power infrastructure.
On January 14, 2026, the world’s largest synchronous national grid celebrated a significant accomplishment with the commissioning of a new 628 ckm Transmission Line at 765 kV. This line connects the Bhadla II substation to the Sikar II substation and is essential for transporting renewable energy from the Rajasthan Renewable Energy Zone. The addition of this line will facilitate the evacuation of an additional 1,100 MW from the Bhadla, Ramgarh, and Fatehgarh Solar Power Complexes.
Substantial Growth Since 2014
Since April 2014, India’s transmission network has seen impressive growth, expanding by 71.6%. The addition of 209,000 ckm of transmission lines has significantly boosted the transformation capacity by 876 GVA. The inter-regional power transfer capacity has now reached 120,340 MW, enabling efficient electricity distribution across various regions and successfully embodying the vision of “One Nation – One Grid – One Frequency.”
Future Expansion Plans
Currently, several inter-state transmission projects are in progress, which will add around 40,000 ckm of new transmission lines along with 399 GVA of additional transformation capacity. In parallel, intra-state transmission projects are expected to contribute another 27,500 ckm of transmission lines and 134 GVA of transformation capacity. These enhancements will further increase the reliability of the grid and its ability to distribute power effectively.
The ongoing expansion of India’s transmission capacity is critical for accommodating the nation’s growing non-fossil fuel power generation, which is targeted to reach 500 GW by 2030. This milestone of 500,000 ckm of transmission lines underscores the government’s commitment to providing a stable, affordable, and secure electricity supply nationwide, while simultaneously supporting the rapid integration of renewable energy sources.
