India Accelerates TB Elimination Efforts with MP MPs Engagement
In a concerted effort to combat tuberculosis, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Shri JP Nadda, led a key meeting today with Members of Parliament from Madhya Pradesh. This interaction is part of the ongoing ‘TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan’ initiative and reflects the government’s commitment to mobilize resources and partnerships at the parliamentary level towards eradicating TB in India.
Parliamentarians Play Crucial Role
The gathering, orchestrated under the theme “Parliamentarians Championing a TB Mukt Bharat” at Madhya Pradesh Bhawan, emphasized the vital role elected officials play in driving community-level initiatives and fostering cooperation across party lines. The event included notable figures such as Union Minister for Communications Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, Union Minister of State for Health Smt. Anupriya Patel, and Union Minister of State for Tribal Affairs Shri Durgadas Uikey.
Progress in Fighting Tuberculosis
During the meeting, Minister Nadda shared updates highlighting India’s notable advancements in the battle against tuberculosis. According to the WHO Global TB Report 2025, India has achieved a 21% reduction in TB incidence from 2015 to 2024, which is almost double the global average. Additionally, the country has reported a 25% decrease in TB-related deaths, while treatment success rates have soared to 90%, exceeding the global average of 88%. These successes are attributed to dedicated political leadership and effective program implementation.
Importance of Community Engagement
Nadda reiterated that community involvement is essential for the success of the TB elimination strategy. He called on MPs to engage their constituencies actively, raise awareness, and ensure that patients receive essential psychosocial support. This groundwork is crucial for fostering an environment where TB can be identified and treated effectively. Union Minister of State for Health, Smt. Anupriya Patel, commended Madhya Pradesh for its proactive stance in enhancing community-based screening, particularly in tribal and remote regions. She noted a surge in TB notifications, a sign that the state’s outreach initiatives are gaining traction. Furthermore, technological advancements such as AI-enabled chest X-rays and mobile diagnostic units are helping to strengthen diagnostic capabilities.
Commitment from Local MPs
The MPs from Madhya Pradesh reaffirmed their dedication to intensifying efforts under the TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan. They committed to organizing Ni-kshay Shivirs for early detection of TB cases, engaging with local healthcare facilities, and establishing strong community support networks through Ni-kshay Mitras and other local volunteers. Initiated in December 2024, the TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan aims for early detection, timely treatment, and comprehensive care tailored for high-risk individuals. With over 2 lakh MYBharat volunteers and 6.7 lakh Ni-kshay Mitras already involved, the mission is set to significantly impact the national goal of achieving a TB-free India.
