Independent Audit Advisory Committee Convenes for Seventy-First Session from 2-5 December

The Independent Audit Advisory Committee of the United Nations convened its seventy-second session from December 2 to 5 at the UN Headquarters in New York. The session was attended by all committee members, including Chair Anton Kosyanenko and Vice-Chair Suresh R. Sharma. A key highlight was the tenth meeting of representatives from various UN System Oversight Advisory Committees, which fostered discussions on best practices and future strategies for audit and oversight within the UN framework.

Successful Meeting of Oversight Committees

During the session, the Independent Audit Advisory Committee successfully held its tenth meeting with representatives from 23 UN entities’ audit and oversight committees. Chaired by Anton Kosyanenko and co-chaired by Rakesh Nangia from the UNDP Audit and Evaluation Advisory Committee, the meeting facilitated a dynamic exchange of information. Participants discussed effective practices and strategic visions for enhancing audit advisory and oversight functions across the UN system. This collaborative effort aims to strengthen the overall governance and accountability mechanisms within the organization.

Engagement with Key UN Officials

The committee engaged in discussions with several high-ranking UN officials to address pressing issues. Meetings included conversations with Catherine Pollard, Under-Secretary-General of the Department of Management, Strategy, Policy and Compliance, focusing on the implications of the UN80 initiative and the challenges stemming from the current financial landscape. Additionally, discussions with Fatoumata Ndiaye, Under-Secretary-General for the United Nations Internal Oversight Services, revolved around the OIOS workplan for peacekeeping operations and budget proposals for the upcoming years. These dialogues are crucial for aligning oversight strategies with the UN’s operational needs.

Leadership Changes and Future Sessions

In a significant development, the Independent Audit Advisory Committee unanimously elected Suresh R. Sharma as the new Chair and Jeanette Franzel as Vice-Chair for the year 2026. This leadership transition is expected to bring fresh perspectives to the committee’s initiatives and oversight functions. Looking ahead, the seventy-third session of the committee is scheduled for February 18-20, 2026, in New York, where members will continue to address critical issues affecting the UN’s audit and oversight capabilities.
