Imtiaz Ali and Anurag Kashyap Join Forces for Coming-of-Age Short ‘Bobby Beauty Parlour’ This Friendship Week

Longtime friends and celebrated filmmakers Imtiaz Ali and Anurag Kashyap are joining forces for a unique project, presenting the coming-of-age short film Bobby Beauty Parlour. Scheduled to premiere on the Oh Short Flips YouTube channel at midnight on August 6, the film’s release coincides with Friendship Week, making it a timely tribute to the bonds of friendship.

A Glimpse into Childhood Friendships

Directed by Shashwat Dwivedi, Bobby Beauty Parlour explores the poignant story of childhood best friends Eelu and Manu. The narrative unfolds over one final afternoon they spend together before life leads them down different paths. Set primarily within a neighborhood beauty parlour, the film captures the essence of adolescence as the friends engage in drinking, napping, and playful arguments, all while trying to preserve a friendship on the brink of change.

This collaboration marks a rare creative reunion between Ali and Kashyap, whose friendship dates back to their university days in Delhi. Kashyap has been actively curating content for the Oh Short Flips YouTube channel, while Bobby Beauty Parlour is produced by Ranjan Singh and curated by Kashyap himself.

Insights from the Filmmakers

Imtiaz Ali shared his reflections on the film, stating, “The most spectacular moments of life don’t scream, but remain a part of our character forever. It is such moments that make Bobby Beauty Parlour charming. Anurag Kashyap described the project as a heartfelt coming-of-age tale, emphasizing its themes of friendship and aspirations. He remarked, “About friendship, aspirations and growing up. And the best part is the producer Janhavi is also the co-writer and shot the film. Director Shashwat, is someone that started out with me whose growth has been so much and feels so personal.” His comments reflect the deep personal ties and shared history among the filmmakers.

Celebrating Friendship Week

He stated, “Bobby Beauty Parlour is an acclaimed short which has travelled to many festivals across the world. Essentially a heart-warming story about friends, life and its realities, it fits perfectly for a friendship week release.” This sentiment underscores the film’s universal appeal and relevance.

Director Shashwat Dwivedi expressed his enthusiasm about the film reaching audiences through YouTube. He said, “Bobby Beauty Parlour has been an amazing experience for me, especially because of the people involved in it. I’m glad the film is releasing on YouTube, given I’ve learnt so much of my filmmaking through the platform, it feels good to give something back for a change. It’s also tough to believe that two of my favourite filmmakers are presenting the film, both of whom have had a great impact on my life. I really hope it reaches a wide audience and people start missing their friends after watching it.”

With its exploration of nostalgia, friendship, and the transition into adulthood, Bobby Beauty Parlour aims to resonate emotionally with viewers when it debuts exclusively on the Oh Short Flips YouTube channel during Friendship Week.
