Hikers Face Life-Threatening Hypothermia Amidst Heavy Snowfall
Hikers near Mount Everest are facing dire conditions as a sudden blizzard has left many stranded and in distress. Reports indicate that at least one hiker has died, while over 200 others remain trapped on the eastern slopes of Everest in Tibet. The blizzard, which began on Friday evening, has prompted a massive rescue operation involving local villagers and rescue workers who are working tirelessly to clear snow and assist those in need.
Rescue Operations Underway
Rescue efforts are currently focused on evacuating hikers from the treacherous conditions on Everest’s eastern slopes. Authorities have successfully guided around 350 individuals to safety in the township of Qudang. The area, situated at an altitude exceeding 4,900 meters (16,000 feet), has become increasingly difficult to access due to heavy snowfall. Local villagers and rescue teams are collaborating to clear snow and establish safe passage for those still trapped. Communication with the stranded hikers remains ongoing, ensuring that they receive necessary support and updates during this challenging time.
Experiences of Stranded Hikers
Among those affected by the blizzard is nature photographer Dong Shuchang, who had traveled to the region during China’s Golden Week holiday. He described the harrowing conditions as lightning and thunderstorms accompanied relentless snowfall. Dong’s group, which had ascended to an altitude of 4,600 meters, was forced to turn back due to the severe weather. He recounted how their gear was inadequate against the snow, leading to several members of his group showing signs of hypothermia. The group spent the night in a hotel in Qudang, relying on a generator for power, and expressed relief upon receiving assistance as the storm finally subsided.
Challenges Faced by Rescuers and Hikers
The blizzard has posed significant challenges not only for the hikers but also for the rescuers. One woman shared her concern for her husband, who was slowly descending from the mountains amidst thick snow cover. She noted that even for the rescuers, clearing a path through the snow has proven to be a daunting task. Another hiker, Eric Wen, reported that despite being adequately dressed, three members of his group suffered from hypothermia due to the extreme conditions. They had to continuously clear snow from their tents to prevent collapse, highlighting the severity of the situation.

The blizzard near Mount Everest is part of a broader pattern of extreme weather affecting the region. Neighboring Nepal has experienced devastating torrential rains and floods, resulting in at least 47 fatalities and significant infrastructure damage. Meanwhile, Typhoon Matmo has struck China’s eastern coast, leading to the evacuation of approximately 150,000 residents. These weather events underscore the increasing unpredictability of climate patterns in the region, raising concerns for both local communities and tourists alike.
