Andrew Lissimore, the founder of Headphones.com, has transitioned from running an audio apparel site to launching a new startup called Lantern, aimed at enhancing customer loyalty for e-commerce businesses. Frustrated with traditional customer acquisition methods that relied heavily on platforms like Meta and Google, Lissimore sought a more effective way to retain existing customers. His journey led to the creation of Lantern, a loyalty solution designed specifically for the Shopify ecosystem, which is now available for other businesses to implement.

From Headphones.com to Lantern

For nearly a decade, Andrew Lissimore has been at the helm of Headphones.com, catering to audiophiles with a passion for high-quality audio gear. However, he recognized a significant challenge: while acquiring new customers was essential, retaining existing ones was even more critical for sustainable growth. Lissimore began exploring loyalty programs within the Shopify ecosystem but found that most existing solutions were limited to spend and tier-based systems. This realization prompted him to develop a custom solution tailored to his business’s unique needs.

What began as a project to enhance customer loyalty for Headphones.com has now evolved into Lantern, a startup that offers a comprehensive loyalty program for Shopify merchants. Initially, Lissimore experimented with various apps to create a multi-faceted loyalty system that included stamps, spending points, and referrals. However, the complexity of managing these disparate systems led to challenges in user experience and brand consistency. To address these issues, Lissimore collaborated with Shopify designers Kyle Peatt and Dominic McPhee, who have since joined Lantern as co-founders, bringing their expertise in design and technology to the venture.

Streamlined Loyalty Solutions

Lantern’s platform simplifies the process of customer account management, loyalty tracking, and referral programs for Shopify vendors. The system allows businesses to reward both new and returning customers, offering points for various activities, including participation in community forums. One of Lantern’s key advantages is its seamless integration; merchants can implement the solution without needing to add extra code, making it accessible for businesses of all sizes.

Lissimore believes that his experience with Headphones.com provided invaluable insights into the challenges faced by sellers in improving customer retention. He noted that many businesses, particularly in sectors like fashion and cosmetics, naturally benefit from repeat purchases. In contrast, the audio equipment market requires a more strategic approach to encourage customers to return. After adopting Lantern, Headphones.com saw a significant increase in its repeat purchase rate, climbing from 30% to 50%, while the time between purchases was cut in half.

Funding and Future Plans

Lantern has attracted attention from investors, successfully raising $3.1 million in seed funding led by Salesforce Ventures, with contributions from Sidekick Partners, Day One Ventures, and individual investors, including Vessi’s Tony Yi. The startup competes with established players like LoyaltyLion and Yotpo, but its unique approach to customer retention sets it apart. Rob Keith, a partner at Salesforce Ventures, highlighted Lantern’s innovative strategy, which goes beyond traditional point-based loyalty systems.

Keith emphasized the strength of Lantern’s founding team, noting Lissimore’s firsthand experience as a merchant and the technical expertise of Peatt and McPhee from Shopify. This combination allows Lantern to create solutions that feel integrated into the Shopify platform rather than merely added on. The startup’s features, such as wallet functionality that appears directly at checkout, enhance the user experience for both consumers and brands.

Looking ahead, Lantern plans to leverage artificial intelligence to provide clients with insights and recommendations aimed at improving customer retention. With a growing client base that includes successful brands like skincare company Counter and footwear brand Vessi, Lantern is poised to make a significant impact in the e-commerce loyalty space.
