Guntur to Host SARAS Mela 2026, Celebrating Women’s Entrepreneurship
The Union Minister of State for Rural Development and Communications, Dr. Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, has announced that Guntur will be the host city for the national-level SARAS Mela from January 6 to January 18, 2026. This inaugural event marks a pivotal moment for the region, designed to bring together Women’s Self-Help Groups (SHGs) from across India to celebrate their entrepreneurial talents and craftsmanship.
Dr. Pemmasani emphasized the significance of the SARAS Mela as a crucial platform for women associated with the Development of Women and Children in Rural Areas (DWCRA) in Andhra Pradesh. He noted that the event presents a valuable opportunity for local SHGs to familiarize themselves with national and international standards, explore new product ideas, and learn modern marketing tactics to enhance their businesses.
Event Details and Highlights
The event will kick off with an inauguration ceremony at 4:00 PM on January 8, 2026, led by the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh alongside Minister Pemmasani. This will be the first time Guntur hosts an event of this magnitude, showcasing a flagship initiative aimed at boosting livelihoods in rural areas.
Over the span of 13 days, the SARAS Mela will display India’s rich cultural heritage and a diverse array of artisanal products. The Mela aims to empower around 300 women artisans and entrepreneurs selected from 21 States and Union Territories, offering them a unique opportunity for national exposure and market access.
Artisans and Products on Display
Attendees can look forward to a plethora of authentic handmade goods, including bamboo crafts, traditional textiles such as Pochampally and Gadwal weaves, jewelry, handicrafts, home décor, and eco-friendly jute products. Additionally, a dedicated All-India SHG Food Court will treat visitors to an assortment of regional delicacies like Rayalaseema cuisine and Madugula Halwa.
Cultural Attractions and Training Sessions
The Mela promises to be a vibrant celebration, featuring cultural and entertainment programs each evening, with special activities for children. Performances will range from inter-state to state-level showcases, bringing communities together through art and culture.
Moreover, structured capacity-building and training sessions will be offered to SHG members led by expert resource persons, focusing on key themes for sustainable livelihoods. The event will also spotlight success stories of women entrepreneurs at the Lakhapati Didi Pavilion, celebrating diverse livelihood activities from various districts.
Safety and Accessibility
To ensure a safe environment for all participants and visitors, comprehensive arrangements, including 24/7 surveillance with over 100 CCTV cameras and continuous security personnel, will be in place throughout the event. Additionally, participating SHG members will be provided with free accommodation, meals, and transportation for the duration of the Mela.
Organized by the Guntur Zilla Samakhya in collaboration with the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) and the Society for Elimination of Rural Poverty (SERP), SARAS Mela 2026 will be held at the Open Ground opposite Reddy College, Adarsha Nagar, Narasaraopet Road in Guntur. Entry to the event is free for all, inviting everyone to partake in this celebration of culture and entrepreneurship.
