Govt Offers ₹50,000 Interest-Free Loan to Tobacco Farmers
The Government of India has announced a significant support initiative for Flue-Cured Virginia (FCV) tobacco growers in Andhra Pradesh. A one-time, interest-free loan of ₹50,000 per barn will be made available under the Interest-Free Working Capital Assistance Scheme. This financial aid aims to provide crucial support to farmers as they navigate the changing landscape of global tobacco markets.
As the 2025–26 crop season kicks off, auctions for FCV tobacco in Andhra Pradesh began on March 25, 2026. So far, around 100 million kg of FCV tobacco have been auctioned. This crop is mainly grown in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, which are key regions in the Indian tobacco industry.
Support Amid Changing Market Conditions
The global market for tobacco is currently facing shifts in demand, geopolitical tensions, and changing international trade dynamics. These factors have made the environment for procurement and marketing increasingly complex. In response, the government is coordinating efforts to enhance procurement processes, increase market participation, and promote exports. Continuous dialogue with exporters, buyers, growers, and other stakeholders is a cornerstone of this initiative, aimed at promoting a smoother marketing experience and bolstering the FCV tobacco sector.
Details of the Financial Assistance
The assistance package for FCV tobacco farmers will effectively provide around ₹220 crore in support, covering approximately 44,000 growers. Notably, the funds will be disbursed directly to the farmers through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system. This approach ensures that the financial aid reaches the intended recipients swiftly.
By offering this financial assistance, the government aims to enhance the farmers’ liquidity. This will help them meet immediate household expenses, repay institutional loans, acquire inputs for the upcoming crop season, and lessen their reliance on private loans. Moreover, this initiative highlights the government’s commitment to the welfare of FCV tobacco growers, ensuring that they have access to timely and essential financial resources.
