Empowered Women Shine at WorldSkills Shanghai 2026
At the WorldSkills Competition in Shanghai, 14 remarkable young women are making their mark as part of Team India. Competing from September 22 to 27, these talented individuals represent a diverse array of vocational and technical skills, showcasing India’s growing commitment to elevating women’s roles in the workforce.
With a total of 70 members, Team India is vying for top honors across 63 skill categories at this prestigious 48th edition of the competition. The female competitors are participating in various fields, including Chemical Laboratory Technology, Logistics and Freight Forwarding, Visual Merchandising, Fashion Technology, and Health and Social Care. Other areas of competition include cooking, hairdressing, beauty therapy, and more, demonstrating the extensive skill set of young women in India.
The presence of these competitors underscores a transformative shift in the landscape of vocational skills for women in India. According to Ms. Manisha Sensarma, an official delegate for WorldSkills India and a Senior Economic Adviser in the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, their participation reflects a crucial change. “The diversity of skills these young women are competing in—notably in fields like logistics, hospitality, and creative arts—sends a strong message that skills know no gender,” she stated. The government aims to provide women with opportunities and training that align with their personal aspirations, empowering them to pursue careers in various fields.
The competitors include Sampada Desai, excelling in Chemical Laboratory Technology; Mehrunissa Begum in Logistics and Freight Forwarding; Anuja Ajay Vare in Visual Merchandising; and several others in creative and service-oriented skills. Their diverse backgrounds and specializations highlight the expanding career options available to young women, moving beyond traditional roles.
WorldSkills offers competitors a platform to compare their skills against international standards and interact with the world’s leading skilled professionals. Team India’s young women have undergone rigorous training to prepare for this global stage, mastering not just technical know-how but also the resilience to thrive under pressure.
