Government Updates Advertisement Rates for Print Media
The Indian government has taken a significant step to support the print media industry by establishing the 9th Rate Structure Committee (RSC) on November 11, 2021. The primary aim of this committee was to review and propose updates to advertisement rates in print media, reflecting the current economic climate and operational costs.
In its efforts to gather comprehensive insights, the committee consulted a diverse array of stakeholders. These included the Indian Newspaper Society (INS), All India Small Newspapers Association (AISNA), and the Small-Medium-Big Newspapers Society (SMBNS), along with representatives from various publications ranging in size from small to large.
The committee conducted a thorough analysis of several cost factors impacting print media operations. Key elements considered were increases in newsprint costs, inflation trends, operational expenses, labor costs, and the expense of imported paper. By carefully evaluating these factors, the RSC was able to make informed recommendations.
Following their assessment, the committee reached a consensus on various recommendations, which have subsequently been approved by the government. Among these recommendations are updated premium rates for color advertisements and preferential positioning for ads in print media.
This revision of advertisement rates aims to align with the rising costs of inputs and to address the growing competition faced by print media from digital platforms. Enhanced revenue opportunities are expected to provide crucial support to sustain print media operations, thus reinforcing local news ecosystems.
With improved financial stability, print media organizations will be better equipped to invest in high-quality content creation, ensuring they continue to serve the public’s best interests effectively.
In recognizing the enduring significance of print media within a diverse media environment, the government seeks to ensure that citizens receive effective communication and information. This initiative emphasizes the importance of maintaining robust print media as a key player in the landscape of information dissemination.
This development was highlighted by Dr. L. Murugan, the Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs, during a session in the Lok Sabha. His response was prompted by queries from several members, including Shri Suresh Kumar Shetkar, Shri Vijayakumar alias Vijay Vasanth, and Shri Manickam Tagore B.
