Government Evaluates Key Infrastructure Projects to Boost Connectivity
In a pivotal move to enhance national infrastructure, the 105th meeting of the Network Planning Group (NPG) was held today, focusing on important infrastructure initiatives designed to improve multimodal connectivity and logistics efficiency. These projects align with the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan (PMGS NMP) and are expected to generate significant socio-economic benefits across their respective regions.
The NPG examined a total of eight projects, including seven railway initiatives and one road improvement project. Each proposal was assessed for its compatibility with the PM GatiShakti principles, emphasizing integrated multimodal infrastructure and better last-mile connectivity to economic and social hubs.
Railway Projects
The Ministry of Railways outlined several ambitious proposals:
- 3rd & 4th Line Arakkonam – Renigunta: This project involves a 76.559 km extension of the railway line to ease congestion and increase capacity between Arakkonam and Renigunta, connecting Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. It’s part of a broader initiative aimed at significantly improving freight transport efficiency.
- Doubling of Erode – Karur Section: A proposal to double the 66.67 km railway line in Tamil Nadu aims to enhance operational efficiency and connectivity for both passenger and freight services, benefiting industries reliant on efficient logistics.
- 3rd & 4th Line Guntakal – Bellary: This project will quadruple the existing line between Guntakal and Bellary, strengthening the freight route that supports major industries in the region.
- 3rd & 4th Line Guntakal – Wadi: Stretching 230 km, this initiative aims to expand freight capacity crucial for transporting coal and supporting cement businesses.
- Doubling between Salem-Karur-Dindigul: The doubling of this 159.26 km stretch will support vital energy and industrial sectors in Tamil Nadu, improving freight operations and logistics.
- Yadadri – Kazipet Third and Fourth Line: Covering 77.958 km, this project will enhance one of Telangana’s key rail routes, ensuring better connectivity across major cities.
- Talegaon-Uruli Electrified Multi-Tracking Line: This project in Maharashtra will create a multi-tracking line to improve connections between important industrial and logistics hubs.
Road Improvement Project
In addition to railway initiatives, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways proposed the upgrade of National Highway NH-544D. This project will expand the existing two-lane road between Vinukonda and Guntur into a four-lane highway, dramatically improving travel efficiency and safety. This upgrade will serve as a critical link between major national highways and support regional development.
Upon completion, these projects are expected to significantly enhance logistics efficiency, reduce travel times, and foster economic growth in the areas they serve. The insights and evaluations from this meeting were presented under the leadership of the Joint Secretary for Logistics in the DPIIT, showcasing the government’s commitment to advancing infrastructure across India.
