Government Enhances Disaster Alert System for Rural Communities
The Government is making significant strides in disseminating vital information on welfare schemes, public advisories, and disaster management, especially aimed at rural, remote, and border areas. Through its public broadcaster, Prasar Bharati, which encompasses Doordarshan and Akashvani, the Government is leveraging a variety of platforms including radio, television, and digital mediums to ensure that essential information reaches as many citizens as possible.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), which operates under the Ministry of Home Affairs, has implemented the Common Alerting Protocol (CAP)-based Integrated Alert System. This system facilitates geo-targeted dissemination of disaster alerts, ensuring that critical warnings are communicated effectively. Alerts are issued in regional languages via SMS, mobile applications, the SACHET portal, GAGAN/NaVIC satellite terminals, and RSS feeds, emphasizing the Government’s commitment to accessible communication.
Community Preparedness Initiatives
In addition to efficient alert systems, the NDMA is actively working to strengthen community preparedness through a range of awareness initiatives. These efforts include the use of electronic and print media, regional-language content, outreach vans, and engaging street plays to educate communities about disaster readiness.
Government Measures for Information Accessibility
To enhance last-mile delivery of important messages, the Government has rolled out several key initiatives:
- Expansion of DD FreeDish: This Direct-to-Home (DTH) platform ensures nationwide coverage, including hard-to-reach rural and border areas. It features all Doordarshan channels, 48 Akashvani channels, select private channels, and over 260 educational channels.
- Targeted Public-Information Programming: Doordarshan and DD News provide dedicated programs and documentaries focused on Government schemes and disaster advisories through daily bulletins and shows such as Charcha Mein, Aapda Ka Samna, Cabinet Ke Bade Faisle, and Cyber Alert.
- Digital Access Strengthening: Prasar Bharati is enhancing its digital outreach through social media channels. Over 260 Akashvani stations are also accessible via the ‘NewsOnAir’ app available for Android and iOS.
- WAVES OTT Platform: Prasar Bharati has launched WAVES, a platform that allows citizens to live-stream Doordarshan and Akashvani channels, in addition to selected private news and entertainment content.

Currently, five Akashvani FM stations are operational in Kosi and Purnia divisions, enhancing local broadcast capabilities:
