Julieta Lanteri (22 March 1873 — 25 February 1932)was a prominent Argentine physician and suffragist who played a significant role in the struggle for women’s rights in her country. She was an Italian-Argentine doctor and the first woman to vote in Argentina and South America. She was a staunch advocate for women’s rights and worked tirelessly to improve healthcare.

Life and Career

She was born on 22 March 1873, in the city of the Province of Cuneo, Italy.

Lanteri studied medicine at the University of Buenos Aires, graduating in 1896 with honors. She continued her studies in Europe, obtaining a degree in gynecology and obstetrics in Paris, France.

In 1900, Lanteri returned to Argentina and became one of the first women to practice medicine in the country. She was appointed as the head of the maternity ward at the Hospital Rawson in Buenos Aires, where she worked for several years.

Lanteri was also a leading suffragist and campaigned tirelessly for women’s right to vote. In 1911, she founded the Feminist Center, which was the first feminist organization in Argentina. She also created the National Feminist Party in 1918, which fought for women’s political rights.

Despite facing opposition from conservative groups and political parties, Lanteri continued to fight for women’s suffrage. She organized numerous rallies and marches and was arrested several times for her activism.

In 1919, Argentina finally granted women the right to vote, making it the first country in Latin America to do so. Lanteri became the first woman to vote in Argentina, casting her ballot in the elections that same year.

In addition to her work in medicine and women’s rights, Lanteri was also an accomplished writer and poet. She published several books and articles on a range of topics, including women’s rights, education, and health.

Julieta Lanteri passed away on 25 February 1932, at the age of 58. Her contributions to the fight for women’s rights in Argentina continue to be celebrated and recognized to this day.

Award and Legacy

Julieta Lanteri’s legacy is one of perseverance and dedication to the cause of women’s rights. Her activism and advocacy played a significant role in securing voting rights for women in Argentina and helped pave the way for future advancements in women’s equality.

Lanteri has been posthumously recognized for her contributions to women’s rights and gender equality. In 2011, the Argentine government named her an “Illustrious Citizen of the City of Buenos Aires” in recognition of her activism and achievements.

In 2016, a statue of Julieta Lanteri was unveiled in Buenos Aires, making her the first woman to be honored with a statue in the city’s Plaza del Congreso.

In addition to these recognitions, Lanteri’s name continues to be associated with the struggle for women’s rights in Argentina. Her life and work are often discussed in the context of the feminist movement in the country, and her achievements continue to inspire women’s rights activists around the world.
