Former South Korean First Lady Sentenced to 20 Months in Prison for Bribery

The wife of South Korea’s former president, Kim Keon Hee, has been sentenced to 20 months in prison for accepting bribes from the controversial Unification Church. The Seoul Central District Court found her guilty of misusing her position for personal gain, although she was acquitted of charges related to stock price manipulation and receiving free opinion polls before the 2022 presidential election. This unprecedented ruling marks the first time in South Korean history that both a former president and their spouse have been convicted simultaneously.

Details of the Court Ruling

Judge Woo In-sung delivered the verdict, emphasizing that Kim had exploited her status for personal benefits. He remarked on the responsibility that comes with higher positions, stating, “The higher [one’s] position, the more consciously one must guard against such conduct.” The court highlighted that Kim failed to reject solicitations and was more focused on self-adornment than ethical conduct. The special counsel revealed that Kim received gifts worth approximately 80 million won (around $56,000) from the Unification Church, including luxury items like a Graff diamond necklace and Chanel handbags, in exchange for political favors.

The prosecution had sought a 15-year sentence and a fine of 2 billion won for all charges, but the judge noted that Kim did not actively solicit the bribes and had no significant prior criminal record. As part of her sentence, she was ordered to repay 12.85 million won and forfeit the diamond necklace.

Ongoing Investigations and Additional Charges

In addition to the bribery case, Kim Keon Hee faces further allegations related to her involvement with the Unification Church. She has been accused of participating in a scheme to recruit church followers for the conservative People Power Party, which her husband, Yoon Suk Yeol, is associated with. Furthermore, she is under investigation for allegedly accepting gifts in exchange for government job appointments. These additional cases are still pending in court.

Despite the serious nature of the charges, Kim has consistently denied all allegations, labeling them as “deeply unjust.” She acknowledged receiving Chanel bags but claimed she returned them unused. During a public apology last August, she expressed remorse for causing concern among the public, stating, “I am truly sorry that a nobody like me has caused concern to the people.”

Impact on the Unification Church and Broader Controversies

The investigations into Kim’s dealings with the Unification Church have also led to significant repercussions for the church itself. Han Hak-ja, the leader of the Unification Church, has been arrested as part of the ongoing inquiries. This case has drawn considerable public attention, highlighting the intertwining of politics and religious organizations in South Korea.

Beyond the bribery allegations, Kim Keon Hee has faced other controversies. Last year, Sookmyung Women’s University annulled her art education degree from 1999 after an ethics panel determined that she had plagiarized her master’s thesis. This incident has further fueled public scrutiny of her actions and integrity.

Historical Significance of the Conviction

The conviction of Kim Keon Hee is a landmark event in South Korean politics, as it marks the first instance where both a former president and their spouse have been convicted of crimes simultaneously. This unprecedented situation raises questions about the accountability of political figures and their families in the country. As the legal proceedings continue, the implications of these cases may have lasting effects on public trust in political institutions and the relationship between politics and influential organizations like the Unification Church.
