FM Nirmala Sitharaman Advocates for Amicable Internal Resolution in Tata Dispute
MUMBAI: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman emphasized the need for an amicable resolution to the ongoing dispute between Tata Trusts and Tata Sons. She described the Tata conglomerate as a vital part of the Indian economy and expressed hope for a swift return to normal operations. Sitharaman made these remarks during a fireside chat organized by Financial Express, marking her first public comments on the matter.
Sitharaman acknowledged the significant brand value of Tata and the contributions of the Parsi community to its global presence. She stated, “This is a very critical component of the Indian economy, and therefore it has to be amicably settled among themselves.” Her comments came in response to allegations from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who accused the government of attempting to destabilize the Tata Group amid the dispute between the Trusts and Tata Sons.
The Finance Minister stressed that the resolution of the dispute requires commercial judgment and a spirit of cordiality between the involved parties. She refrained from commenting on potential government intervention, labeling the issue as sensitive. Sitharaman also dismissed claims of government favoritism towards specific corporate groups, noting that industrial houses criticized in Parliament were actively sought for investment by opposition-led states like Karnataka and Telangana.
