Farhan Akhtar: Crafting a Legacy
Farhan Akhtar (born 9 January 1974) is an Indian actor, filmmaker and singer who works in Hindi films.
Early Life
He was born on 9 January 1974, in Mumbai, India. His father is renowned screenwriter and lyricist Javed Akhtar, and his mother is writer and screenwriter Honey Irani. His parents divorced when he was young, and his father later married veteran actress Shabana Azmi.
Growing up in a creative household significantly influenced Farhan’s artistic development. He attended Maneckji Cooper School in Mumbai, where he was a good student but also showed early interest in creative pursuits. His sister Zoya Akhtar, who is also a successful filmmaker, was his childhood companion and later became his frequent collaborator in the film industry.
During his teenage years, Farhan developed a keen interest in filmmaking and writing. He started writing early, penning poetry and stories, clearly influenced by his father’s literary background. Before entering the film industry, he worked briefly in advertising as a copywriter, which helped him develop his creative writing skills further.
His childhood was spent in an environment where he was exposed to literature, poetry, and cinema through his parents’ work and social circle. This rich cultural upbringing would later influence his multifaceted career as a director, actor, screenwriter, singer, and producer.
Career
Farhan Akhtar’s career represents a remarkable journey of versatility in Indian cinema. He burst onto the scene as a director in 2001 with “Dil Chahta Hai,” a groundbreaking film that redefined how modern Indian youth and friendship were portrayed on screen. He followed this success with “Lakshya” (2004), a coming-of-age military drama, and then reimagined the classic “Don” franchise with “Don” (2006) and “Don 2” (2011), both starring Shah Rukh Khan.
In 2008, Akhtar surprised audiences by transitioning to acting with “Rock On!!”, where he not only played the lead role of a musician but also showcased his singing abilities. This marked the beginning of a successful acting career that included memorable performances in films like “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara” (2011), “Bhaag Milkha Bhaag” (2013) – where his portrayal of athlete Milkha Singh earned him numerous accolades, “Lucknow Central” (2017), “The Sky Is Pink” (2019), and “Toofaan” (2021).
Alongside his directing and acting endeavors, Akhtar co-founded Excel Entertainment with Ritesh Sidhwani, producing successful films like “Fukrey,” “Dil Dhadakne Do,” and the acclaimed “Gully Boy.” The production house later ventured into digital content with web series such as “Inside Edge” and “Made in Heaven.” His music career, which began with “Rock On!!”, has flourished through live concerts and independent releases. Beyond entertainment, Akhtar has shown strong social commitment by founding MARD (Men Against Rape and Discrimination) in 2013 and serving as UN Women’s Goodwill Ambassador for South Asia. His ability to excel across multiple domains – directing, acting, producing, singing, and social activism – has established him as one of the most versatile personalities in Indian entertainment.
