Empowering Rural Women: Six Crore Lakhpati Didis Initiative Launched

The Indian government is launching a transformative strategy aimed at enhancing livelihoods for rural women through enterprise promotion and improved financial inclusion. The initiative, which seeks to create six crore Lakhpati Didis, was discussed in a recent meeting chaired by Shri Rohit Kansal, the Secretary of the Department of Rural Development. The meeting focused on assessing the progress of the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM) and its associated sub-schemes.

Attended by senior officials, including Joint Secretaries Ms. Swati Sharma and Ms. Jayashree M.G., the meeting aimed to construct a robust marketing ecosystem that empowers rural women producers. This initiative will allow them to move from merely generating livelihoods to owning professionally managed and sustainably operated community enterprises that have reliable access to formal markets.

Creating Sustainable Market Access

During the discussions, plans were outlined to establish 700 SHE-MARTs, alongside 1,000 District Fulfilment Centres and Centres of Excellence, to bolster Self-Help Group (SHG)-led enterprises. The SHE-MARTs will be located in areas with high commercial potential, ensuring robust market linkages for SHG products.

In support of effective implementation, the Secretary emphasized the need for a comprehensive annual calendar of activities and urged adherence to deadlines. Recognizing outstanding contributions from SHG members and community institutions was also highlighted, with a proposed expanded awards framework. Categories for accolades will include Best Performing State, Best Women Entrepreneur, Best Digitalization Initiative, and the coveted Lakhpati Didi Award.

Enhancing Market Opportunities

The Secretary also directed the revision of SARAS Mela Guidelines, promoting an increase in the number of SARAS Melas at both national and state levels. This move aims to enhance sales opportunities for SHG products. Moreover, a new Producer Group App will be launched to streamline the process and resolve any delays in loan applications submitted via the Jan Samarth Portal.

A pivotal point of the meeting was the introduction of a unified marketing identity for Saras Aajeevika, designed to consolidate branding efforts and enhance visibility for SHG products. The initiative aims to create quality packaging that showcases artisans and their communities, elevating the status of rural products in both national and international markets.

Advancing Digital Platforms

The revamped e-Saras portal will transition into a multi-vendor marketplace, significantly broadening the digital accessibility of SHG products. Discussions included plans for revitalizing the flagship Saras Gallery in Connaught Place, New Delhi, focusing on providing customers with an immersive shopping experience.

Furthermore, proposals were made to establish national hubs dedicated to product innovation, design enhancement, quality compliance, and capacity building. These hubs are anticipated to enhance the competitiveness and market readiness of SHG products.

Outcomes from the meeting included detailed operational guidelines for initiatives, ensuring that States and Union Territories can implement them effectively. With strategic guidance from the Ministry, these comprehensive efforts are expected to fortify market access for rural women entrepreneurs and support SHG products in achieving success in the evolving market landscape.
