DGMS Celebrates 125 Years of Enhancing Mine Safety in India
The Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS) marked its 125th Foundation Day today at its headquarters in Dhanbad, Jharkhand. This significant milestone highlights over a century of commitment to ensuring the safety, health, and welfare of mine workers throughout India. The celebration was attended by the Minister of State for Labour & Employment, Sushri Shobha Karandlaje, who served as the Chief Guest. Key officials including DGMS Director General Shri Ujjwal Tah and Joint Secretary Smt. Deepika Kachhal were also present, along with representatives from the mining industry and various stakeholders.
Honor for Mine Workers
During her address, Minister Karandlaje acknowledged the remarkable contributions and sacrifices made by officials and miners alike over the span of DGMS’s history. She pointed out that the mining sector is directly tied to India’s growth trajectory and expressed her admiration for the courage of mine workers who risk their lives to support nation-building.
Safety is Priority
The Minister emphasized that worker safety remains the top priority for the Ministry, in alignment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of making safety paramount. She praised DGMS for enforcing standardized safety regulations across all mining operations and urged for enhanced collaboration between Central and State governments, along with stronger engagement from DGMS’s regional offices to ensure the effective implementation of safety guidelines.
Labour Reforms and Technological Advancements
Highlighting the importance of recent labour reforms, Sushri Karandlaje discussed the introduction of four Labour Codes, which streamline 29 existing laws. These reforms aim to develop a Viksit Bharat (Developed India) and enhance social security for all workers, including those employed under contractual terms. She encouraged DGMS to raise awareness about these Codes and adopt modern technologies to better the safety standards in mines. The Ministry assured full support to DGMS in its mission of promoting safer and sustainable mining practices.
Exhibits and New Releases
As part of the Foundation Day festivities, the Minister visited an exhibition showcasing the historical progression and achievements in mines safety. Additionally, dignitaries participated in a plantation drive, reinforcing DGMS’s commitment to environmental sustainability. A short film illustrating DGMS’s historical milestones, regulations, and technological advancements in mining safety was screened during the event.
Recognition of Excellence
Among the highlights of the day was the unveiling of a new DGMS logo, as well as the release of a DGMS Theme Song and a digital Coffee Table Book documenting the organization’s journey and contributions. A special Souvenir/Digital Compendium highlighting best practices in mine safety was also introduced. In recognition of their bravery and dedication, Rescue Team Members were honored for their vital roles in protecting miners during emergencies.
Since its establishment in 1902, DGMS has played an essential role in regulating safety and health standards in the mining sector, significantly enhancing the welfare of miners and promoting sustainable growth within the industry.
