Delhi HC Raises Concerns Over Bias in Aryan Khan’s ‘The Ba***ds Of Bollywood’
Aryan Khan’s debut directorial venture, “The Ba***ds of Bollywood,” has ignited a legal controversy following accusations that a character in the series bears a striking resemblance to former Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) officer Sameer Wankhede. This resemblance has led Wankhede to file a defamation lawsuit against both Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment and Netflix. The Delhi High Court is now scrutinizing the portrayal, raising questions about the intent behind the scene that has sparked public debate and legal action.
The controversy erupted shortly after “The Ba***ds of Bollywood” premiered, with social media users quickly pointing out that a character in the series closely resembles Sameer Wankhede. Wankhede, who gained notoriety for leading the high-profile drug case involving Aryan Khan in 2021, claims that the portrayal not only ridicules him but also casts him in a negative light. In his petition, he argues that the depiction has resulted in public humiliation, online harassment, and threats directed at his family. Red Chillies Entertainment’s Defense
In a recent court hearing, Senior Advocate Kaul, representing Red Chillies Entertainment, defended the creative decisions made in the series. He asserted that “The Ba***ds of Bollywood” is a work of satire rather than a factual recounting of events. Kaul emphasized that artistic expression allows for characters to be inspired by real-life figures, arguing that anyone could claim a resemblance to a character. He drew parallels to the work of renowned cartoonist R.K. Laxman, whose satirical art often targeted political figures. However, the court expressed skepticism regarding this comparison, noting that Laxman’s cartoons did not exhibit the bias that Wankhede alleges is present in the series.
Wankhede’s Legal Arguments
Wankhede’s legal representative, J. Sai Deepak, countered that even if the creators label the show as satire, they must acknowledge the real-life inspiration behind the character. Deepak contended that the controversial scene does not contribute meaningfully to the narrative and has severe repercussions for Wankhede’s reputation. He argued that the production companies would not suffer if the scene were removed, while Wankhede faces a “public trial” that undermines his integrity. Deepak highlighted a review by Kamal R. Khan, which accused the series of mocking Wankhede, further fueling online abuse directed at the former officer. During the proceedings, Wankhede personally addressed the court, questioning whether he deserved to endure such public scrutiny.
Current Status of the Case
As the legal battle unfolds, the Delhi High Court has yet to deliver a final verdict on the matter. The case has raised significant questions about the intersection of art and reality, particularly in the context of public figures. The ongoing proceedings also touch on Wankhede’s involvement in various legal cases, including investigations by the CBI and ED.
