Defence Ministry Signs Contracts Worth Over Rs 4,100 Crore
The Ministry of Defence has taken a significant step in bolstering India’s defence capabilities by signing contracts totaling approximately Rs 4,106 crore. These agreements cover the acquisition of a specialized communication satellite, GSAT-7C, for the Indian Air Force, and Varunastra Heavyweight Torpedoes for the Indian Navy.
GSAT-7C: Enhancing Air Force Communication
The contract for the GSAT-7C, amounting to Rs 2,563 crore, has been finalized with New Space India Limited, based in Bengaluru. This satellite, which is designed, developed, and manufactured in India, aims to significantly enhance communication capabilities for the Indian Air Force. With advanced features, the GSAT-7C will provide secure, resilient, and seamless communication, thereby strengthening operational effectiveness across the Air Force’s assets.
Varunastra Torpedoes: Strengthening Naval Warfare
In addition to the satellite, a contract valued at Rs 1,543 crore has been signed with Bharat Dynamics Limited in Hyderabad for the Varunastra torpedoes. This indigenous, ship-launched anti-submarine torpedo has been developed by the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory. It boasts advanced maneuvering capabilities, allowing it to engage enemy submarines at extended ranges. This development is expected to significantly enhance the anti-submarine warfare capabilities of the Indian Navy.
Commitment to Self-Reliance
The contracts were formalized in New Delhi on October 15, 2026, during a ceremony attended by Additional Secretary and Director General (Acquisition) of the Department of Defence, Shri A Anbarasu. The signing of these contracts is not just about procurement; it represents a pivotal move towards advancing domestic defence manufacturing capabilities. The initiatives align with the Government’s broader vision of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make-in-India’, which aims to promote self-reliance in critical technological sectors.
