Legal Metrology Rules

By the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities), (Second Amendment) Rules 2022, the Department of Consumer Affairs has allowed electronic products to declare certain mandatory declarations through the QR Code for a period of one year, if not declared in the packaging.

By amending this law, the industry will be able to declare elaborate information in a digital format through QR codes. Relevant statements can be made on the package while other descriptive information can be conveyed to the consumer using QR codes.

In this digital era, the Department will make extensive use of technology to declare the mandatory declarations through QR Codes that can be scanned to view details such as the address of the manufacturer or packager or importer, the common or generic name of the commodity, size and dimensions of the commodity, and customer care details except for the telephone number & e-mail address.

In the past, all pre-packaged commodities, including electronic products, had to declare all mandatory declarations in accordance with the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities), Rules 2011
