Celebrating Ability: The 22nd Divya Kala Mela
The 22nd Divya Kala Mela is set to take place from December 12 to December 22, 2024, at the iconic India Gate in New Delhi. Organized by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjan) (DEPwD) under the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, this event aims to showcase the talents and entrepreneurial spirit of Divyang artisans and entrepreneurs from across India. The National Divyangjan Finance and Development Corporation (NDFDC) is also playing a crucial role in this initiative.
This 11-day extravaganza will feature around 100 Divyang entrepreneurs and artisans from 20 states and Union Territories. The event was inaugurated by Dr. Virendra Kumar, the Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, along with other dignitaries. The Divya Kala Mela not only serves as a platform for showcasing unique products but also aims to empower the Divyang community economically.
A Platform for Empowerment
During the inaugural ceremony, Dr. Virendra Kumar expressed gratitude for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision in coining the term ‘Divyang’. This term honors the immense potential of individuals with disabilities. He highlighted the success of previous Divya Kala Melas, stating that they have provided a unique opportunity for the Divyang community to gain economic empowerment. To date, these events have generated sales exceeding Rs. 14 crores for participating artisans and entrepreneurs.
The Minister emphasized that the Divya Kala Mela is more than just a marketplace; it is a movement aimed at uplifting the Divyang community. It allows them to earn a living and become employment generators. The event serves as a testament to the government’s commitment to inclusivity and empowerment for all.
Government Commitment to Inclusivity
MoS Shri Ramdas Athawale noted the significant improvements in the situation of Divyangjan over the years. He emphasized the government’s commitment to inclusivity and the importance of platforms like the Divya Kala Mela. This event allows Divyangjan to showcase their talents and sell their uniquely crafted products.
Shri B.L. Verma, another MoS, remarked on the remarkable achievements of Divyangjan in various fields, from sports to crafts. He stated that as India strives toward Viksit Bharat@2047, Divyangjan will play a vital role in this journey. The government remains dedicated to providing tailored initiatives to ensure their progress and empowerment.
Showcasing Talent and Creativity
The Divya Kala Mela will feature a wide array of products, including handicrafts, handlooms, eco-friendly stationery, home decor, and organic foods. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore and purchase these vibrant products, supporting local artisans in the process.
In addition to shopping, the event will also include cultural performances by Divyang artists. The grand finale, titled ‘Divya Kala Shakti’, will take place on December 22, 2024. This cultural program will showcase the artistic brilliance of Divyangjan under the theme ‘Ability in Disability’.
The event promises to be a celebration of talent, determination, and skill. It aims to inspire visitors while promoting inclusivity and self-reliance among the Divyang community.
The Divya Kala Mela is not just an event; it is a movement toward the economic empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (PwDs). It provides a national platform for showcasing skills, craftsmanship, and entrepreneurial spirit, allowing Divyangjan to gain visibility and access to new opportunities. Since its inception in 2022, the Divya Kala Mela has successfully been organized in 21 cities across India, including Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru.
This year’s event is expected to be a remarkable celebration of ability and creativity, inviting everyone to participate and support this noble cause.
