Budget 2026: Increased Allocation for Space Department Reaches Rs 13,706 Crore as Capital Spending Accelerates

The Indian Department of Space (DoS) has received a significant budget allocation of Rs 13,705.6 crore for the fiscal year 2026-27, reflecting a notable increase from the revised estimate of Rs 12,448.6 crore for the current year. This rise is primarily attributed to enhanced capital expenditure aimed at advancing new launch vehicles, satellite infrastructure, and upcoming exploration missions. The allocation underscores a strategic shift towards hardware realization for key projects, including the Gaganyaan mission and next-generation satellite systems.

Budget Breakdown and Priorities

The budget allocation for the DoS is divided into revenue and capital expenditures, with Rs 7,329.7 crore designated for revenue and Rs 6,375.9 crore for capital spending. This capital expenditure marks an increase of nearly Rs 1,066 crore compared to the previous year’s revised plan. Officials indicate that this financial boost signifies a transition from preparatory activities to the actual development of hardware for various projects. The focus areas include the Gaganyaan roadmap, next-generation launch vehicles, and high-throughput satellites, which are critical for India’s space ambitions.

Investment in Space Technology

A substantial portion of the budget, amounting to Rs 10,397.1 crore, is allocated under the Space Technology category. This funding supports the operations of major Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) centers, including VSSC, LPSC, URSC, SDSC, and the Human Spaceflight Centre. The increase from Rs 9,602 crore in the revised estimate highlights the government’s commitment to enhancing launch vehicle and satellite projects, as well as ground infrastructure. Additionally, schemes routed through IN-SPACe aim to encourage private sector participation in space activities, further bolstering the industry.

Focus on Space Applications and Sciences

The budget for space applications programs has been set at Rs 1,725.1 crore, reflecting a moderate increase aimed at enhancing earth observation, disaster management, and remote sensing services. These initiatives are primarily carried out by organizations such as SAC, NRSC, and IIRS. Notably, the allocation for Space Sciences has seen a remarkable increase to Rs 569.8 crore, nearly tripling the revised allocation of Rs 184.6 crore. This funding will support various planetary missions, payload development, and astronomy projects, indicating a broader scope of approvals beyond existing missions like Aditya-L1 and Xposat follow-ons.

Institutional Support and Future Outlook

On the institutional front, the budget allocates Rs 393.8 crore for the establishment expenses of the Secretariat, ISRO headquarters, and IN-SPACe. Autonomous bodies such as IIST, PRL, NARL, and NE-SAC will receive Rs 480.6 crore. The commercial arm, NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), has been granted a nominal budget of Rs 0.01 crore, with expectations for its internal and extra budgetary resources to rise to Rs 1,403 crore. This indicates a strong belief that NSIL will play a pivotal role in driving production and generating market revenues. Overall, the budget structure reflects three key priorities: readiness for human spaceflight, expansion of earth observation services, and increased collaboration with the industry, positioning the program for a significant build phase ahead.
