BRICS Nations Unite for Sustainable Agriculture Initiatives
The 16th BRICS Agriculture Ministers’ Meeting took place on June 12-13, 2026, in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, India, under India’s presidency. This pivotal gathering brought together ministers and representatives from BRICS member countries, reflecting a collective commitment to enhance agricultural cooperation and sustainability.
Over the course of three months leading up to the conference, the BRICS Agriculture Working Group focused on four key priorities: Food Security, Agriculture Trade, Regenerative Farming, and Strengthening Partnerships for Innovation. These discussions culminated in the unanimous adoption of the BRICS Agriculture Ministers’ Joint Declaration.
Empowering Farmers and Sustainable Practices
The Joint Declaration emphasizes a farmer-centric approach, highlighting the crucial role of farmers, especially smallholder farmers, in achieving global food security. The BRICS nations aim to promote sustainable agricultural methods and inclusive rural development, fostering resilience in agricultural systems through innovation and equity.
Major Initiatives Announced
One of the standout outcomes is the establishment of the BRICS Network of Centres of Excellence on Agroecology and Regenerative Agriculture, with coordination by the ICAR–Indian Institute of Farming System Research in India. This initiative seeks to promote eco-friendly farming techniques and share best practices among member states.
In another significant move, BRICS countries agreed to launch a Network on Digital Agriculture to encourage collaboration in artificial intelligence, geospatial technologies, and data-driven agricultural solutions. The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi will spearhead this initiative, aiming to align technological advancements with agricultural applications.
The meeting also initiated the Global Forum on Farmers’ Rights in Seed Systems, intended to acknowledge and protect farmers’ rights and traditional knowledge. Coordinated by India, this forum aims to enhance international dialogue on vital issues affecting seed heritage.
Additionally, the BRICS AGRIN (Agro-Inputs, Genetic Resources, and Information Network) Framework will be established to bolster collaboration in seeds and agricultural resources, facilitating technical cooperation and information exchange among member nations.
Strengthening Existing Initiatives
The BRICS Agriculture Ministers reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing the existing BRICS Agricultural Research Platform, transforming it into a dynamic “Knowledge-to-Action Hub.” This will encourage translating research outputs into practical solutions for farmers. They also discussed the necessity of a fair and transparent multilateral trading system, as addressed in discussions on the BRICS Grain Exchange.
Further cooperation across numerous areas such as regenerative agriculture, biodiversity conservation, food security, and livestock development was agreed upon. These efforts aim to create future-ready agricultural systems and enhance farmer incomes.
Empowering Small Farmers and Promoting Sustainability
The dialogue titled “Small Farmers, Women and Youth: Shaping the Future of Food Security” spotlighted the pivotal roles of these groups in building resilient food systems. Delegates emphasized the importance of improving access to markets, finance, and technology for smallholder farmers and marginalized communities.
In a symbolic gesture emphasizing commitment to environmental stewardship, delegates participated in the tree plantation initiative called “BRICS Vatika.” This initiative demonstrated the collective responsibility of the BRICS nations towards sustainability and climate action.
The meeting served as a landmark occasion, marking the first time both member countries and partner nations participated in the BRICS Agriculture Ministers’ Meeting. Approximately 100 delegates engaged in discussions and collaborative opportunities, underscoring a unified approach to strengthening food security and sustainable agricultural practices.
