Bollywood Strikes Back: Man Arrested for Pirating Chhaava

In a significant victory for Bollywood against digital piracy, Mumbai’s South Cyber Police have apprehended a 26-year-old man for illegally distributing the historical film Chhaava, featuring Vicky Kaushal. This arrest comes just days after another major release, Sikandar, starring Salman Khan, was also targeted by pirates, raising alarms within the film industry about the growing threat of copyright infringement.
Details of the Arrest
The arrest followed a formal complaint lodged by Rajat Rahul Haksar, the CEO of August Entertainment Company. A case was registered under Crime Register No. 23/2025, which includes serious charges under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Copyright Act, the Cinematograph Act, and the IT Act. The complaint revealed that between February 14 and March 20, 2025, a staggering 1,818 pirated links to Chhaava were disseminated through platforms such as WhatsApp, Instagram, Telegram, YouTube, and Google, inflicting substantial financial harm on the film’s producers, Maddock Films and August Entertainment.
Cyber investigators conducted a thorough technical analysis that led them to Sagar Manik Randhavan, a resident of Daund, Pune. He allegedly purchased a domain through Hostinger and developed an application to stream pirated films, including Chhaava, to paying subscribers. On April 10, with the assistance of the Daund Police, PSI Rupali Chaudhary and her team arrested Randhavan, who is currently in police custody until April 13, 2025.
Industry Reactions and Concerns
The arrest is seen as a positive step in the ongoing battle against piracy, but the Bollywood industry remains on high alert. There is a pressing hope that those responsible for leaking Sikandar will also be swiftly brought to justice. The situation is particularly alarming as the pirated version of Sikandar emerged before its first theatrical screening, indicating a potential insider breach. The leaked copy was raw and uncut, prompting calls for a comprehensive investigation into the matter.
Industry insiders have expressed their frustration, noting that pirated screenings of Chhaava have been reported in public spaces, including school grounds and busy junctions. One insider remarked, โThere have been videos showing Chhaava being screened in a school ground and on a big screen at a busy junction! We hope the authorities take action against those responsible for these illegal screenings.โ The industry continues to urge law enforcement to prioritize these cases, as piracy not only impacts box office revenues but also undermines the hard work and financial investments made by filmmakers.
Future Implications for Bollywood
The ongoing issue of piracy poses a significant threat to the Bollywood film industry, which relies heavily on box office collections to recoup production costs. As the digital landscape evolves, filmmakers are increasingly vulnerable to copyright infringement. The recent arrests highlight the need for stronger enforcement of copyright laws and greater awareness among audiences about the consequences of consuming pirated content.
As the industry grapples with these challenges, the hope is that swift action against piracy will deter future incidents and protect the creative efforts of filmmakers. The arrest of Randhavan serves as a reminder of the ongoing battle against digital piracy and the importance of safeguarding intellectual property in the entertainment sector.
