Bihar Set for Boost in Fisheries with New Aqua Park and Centre
On June 15, 2026, Bihar is poised for a significant enhancement in its fisheries sector as Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, Shri Rajiv Ranjan Singh, and Chief Minister Shri Samrat Choudhary will lay the foundation stone for an Integrated Aqua Park in Bhojpur. This ambitious project, with an investment of ₹31.21 crore, is expected to revolutionize the region’s inland fisheries ecosystem.
The Integrated Aqua Park aims to incorporate modern technologies and improve resource management, which will create job opportunities while enhancing the quality and export potential of Bihar’s fisheries sector. With abundant inland water resources, including 1.22 lakh hectares of ponds and reservoirs, and over 21,354 kilometers of rivers, Bihar has a robust foundation for becoming a leader in inland aquaculture.
Strengthening Bihar’s Aquaculture
Over the past 11 years, the Indian government has approved investments totaling ₹902.84 crore to bolster Bihar’s fisheries infrastructure, of which ₹579.72 crore falls under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). These efforts have led to significant developments like brood banks, hatcheries, and cold-chain facilities, resulting in fish production doubling and elevating Bihar’s status among inland fish-producing states from 9th to 4th.
Wetland Fisheries Cluster Initiative
A new Wetland Fisheries Cluster has also been initiated, focusing on 9.5 lakh hectares of floodplain lakes and derelict water bodies. This initiative promotes community-based fisheries management, ensuring coordinated stocking and optimized post-harvest processes, which will help further unlock the potential of Bihar’s wetland resources.
Features of the Integrated Aqua Park
The Aqua Park at the Vanasaur Fish Seed Farm will house state-of-the-art facilities, including hatcheries for carp and catfish, biofloc systems, and fish feed mills. It is designed to provide a consistent supply of quality fish seeds and demonstrate progressive aquaculture methods. Furthermore, it will feature training facilities to foster skill development among farmers and fishers.
NFDB Regional Centre: A New Hub
Additionally, the NFDB Regional Centre in Patna is set to become the primary institutional hub for the eastern region. This center will facilitate the adoption of advanced aquaculture systems, such as recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) and biofloc, while promoting continuous skill enhancement and technical support for local fishers and entrepreneurs.
Unlocking Potential for Growth
Bihar boasts immense potential in the fisheries sector, and the integration of initiatives such as the Integrated Aqua Park and the NFDB Regional Centre signals a focused drive towards modernizing this industry. The projects aim to create a cohesive connection between production and institutional knowledge, promising substantial improvements in productivity, income, and job creation.
