Life and Career

Ramaswamy Parameshwaran was born on 13 September 1946, in Mumbai.

Parameshwaran was commissioned into the 8th Battalion of the Mahar Regiment on June 21, 1969. He served in various capacities in the Indian Army and displayed exceptional courage and leadership during his career.

His most notable action occurred during the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War when he was a part of a battalion assigned the task of capturing a heavily fortified enemy position in the Jammu and Kashmir sector. On November 25, 1971, his company came under heavy enemy fire. Despite being severely outnumbered, he led his troops with extraordinary bravery, personally engaging in close combat and inspiring his men to press forward.

In the face of intense opposition, Parameshwaran continued to advance, and his leadership and valor played a crucial role in the success of the mission. For his exceptional courage and selfless dedication, he was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest military decoration.

Tragically, Parameshwaran lost his life during the battle on November 25, 1971, while leading his troops in the attack.
