Assassin’s Creed Shadows Promises Shorter Campaign

In a recent interview, the creative director of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Jonathan Dumont, revealed that the game’s main story will take players approximately 30 to 40 hours to complete. This announcement comes as a response to criticism regarding the lengthy campaigns of previous titles in the series, such as Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, which boasted a nearly 60-hour main quest. Shadows aims to strike a balance between engaging gameplay and a more concise narrative experience.

Campaign Length and Gameplay Expectations

According to Dumont, the anticipated playtime for Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ main story will range between 30 to 40 hours. This information was shared during an interview with the gaming news outlet Genki at a showcase event held in Kyoto, Japan. Players who choose to explore side quests and additional content can expect their total gameplay time to potentially exceed 80 hours, as Dumont indicated that engaging with the game’s broader world could significantly extend the experience.

This shift in focus towards a more manageable campaign length comes after feedback from fans regarding the extensive playtimes of recent RPG-style entries in the franchise. Dumont previously worked on Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, which required over 45 hours to complete the main storyline alone. In contrast, Shadows appears to be positioning itself as a more streamlined option for players seeking a fulfilling yet less time-consuming adventure.

New Modern-Day Narrative Elements

In addition to its main storyline, Assassin’s Creed Shadows will introduce a fresh modern-day narrative that connects the game to future installments in the franchise. Dumont’s comments echo previous statements made by Ubisoft’s vice president and executive producer, Marc-Alexis Cotรฉ, who noted that recent contemporary narratives in the series had become repetitive and lacked significance. Cotรฉ emphasized that Shadows would take a new direction, aiming to reintegrate the modern-day story as a vital component of the overall experience.

This renewed focus on the modern-day storyline is expected to enhance player engagement and provide a more cohesive narrative arc throughout the series. As fans eagerly await the game’s release, the promise of a more meaningful contemporary narrative may help to revitalize interest in the franchise.

Release Date and Market Expectations

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is scheduled to launch on March 20 across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S/X. The game has already generated buzz, with some physical copies reportedly leaking ahead of the official release, leading to early spoilers and discussions among the gaming community. Ubisoft is banking on Shadows to be a significant success, especially following the underwhelming sales performance of Star Wars Outlaws.

Pre-order numbers for Shadows are reportedly on par with those of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, which remains one of the franchise’s most successful launches. As anticipation builds, Ubisoft hopes that the combination of a shorter campaign and a compelling modern-day narrative will attract both new players and long-time fans of the series.
