Ambuja Cements Revitalizes Water Security in Rajasthan Through Pond Restoration
In a transformative effort aimed at bolstering rural water security, Ambuja Cements has embarked on an extensive initiative to rejuvenate traditional village ponds in the Rabriyawas region of Rajasthan. This project, rooted in the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) practices, seeks to enhance climate resilience and promote sustainable water management in this arid landscape.
Community-Centric Water Management
Since its inception in 2006, the program has prioritized the restoration of neglected and silted water bodies, leveraging a community-led approach that marries technical expertise with local participation. A notable example of this initiative is the restoration of Gawai Pond in Balada village, where Ambuja Cements provided necessary machinery and technical guidance, while local residents contributed labor and logistical support.
Transformative Impact on Agriculture
The desilting process at Gawai Pond resulted in an impressive increase of 20,000 cubic meters in storage capacity. Over the past two decades, the pond has undergone 17 rounds of revival, ultimately enhancing its total capacity to an astounding 215,000 cubic meters. This revitalization has critical implications for local agriculture: it has facilitated the cultivation of over 185 hectares of land, led to consistent groundwater recharge during summer months, and improved soil fertility through nutrient-rich silt. Consequently, farmers have experienced better crop yields and have been able to diversify their planting seasons with increased kharif and rabi crops, lessening their reliance on unpredictable rainfall.
Widespread Regional Benefits
To date, Ambuja Cements has successfully revived more than 200 ponds across 33 villages in the Rabriyawas region. This concerted effort has resulted in the creation of over 2.3 million cubic meters of rainwater harvesting capacity, directly benefiting nearly 70,000 local residents and more than 50,000 livestock annually. Furthermore, the initiative actively contributes to ecosystem restoration, promotes biodiversity, and mitigates soil erosion, reflecting the company’s commitment to sustainable water stewardship and community welfare in Rajasthan.
