Airbus Board Concludes Historic Meeting in India, Prioritizing Expansion

Airbus recently concluded a significant four-day visit to India, marking its first board meeting in the country since establishing operations over six decades ago. The visit, which began on September 29, underscored India’s growing importance as a key market for the aerospace giant. During their stay, the board engaged in discussions with Indian officials and explored local manufacturing facilities, highlighting the potential for increased collaboration and investment in the region.
Key Meetings and Discussions
During their visit, Airbus board Chairman Rene Obermann met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi, where they discussed the company’s future in India. The delegation also held discussions with Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu and Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal. Goyal later shared insights on social media regarding the talks, emphasizing the importance of deepening collaboration and increasing investments in India’s aerospace sector. This visit comes at a time when Airbus is looking to expand its footprint in the country, which is seen as a vital hub for its global operations.
Exploring Manufacturing Facilities
The Airbus board took the opportunity to visit key manufacturing sites, including Tata Advanced Systems Ltd (TASL) in Hyderabad and Dynamatic Technologies in Bengaluru. These visits are part of Airbus’s strategy to strengthen its supply chain and enhance local production capabilities. The company has already made significant investments in India, sourcing over $1.4 billion in components and services annually. Airbus aims to further integrate India into its global value chain, reflecting its commitment to the region’s aerospace industry.
Joint Ventures and Future Investments
On September 30, Airbus and Air India announced plans for a joint venture training center in Haryana, which will involve an investment of over Rs 1,000 crore in simulators for training pilots on A320 and A350 aircraft. This initiative is expected to bolster the aviation training infrastructure in India and create skilled professionals for the growing aviation market. Airbus’s spokesperson highlighted that the board’s visit signifies a milestone in their operations, reinforcing India’s role as a critical player in the global aerospace landscape.
Expanding Presence in India
Airbus has established a substantial presence in India’s civil aviation and defense sectors, with two Final Assembly Lines (FALs) for H125 helicopters and C295 military aircraft in collaboration with TASL. The H125 FAL is currently under development in Vemagal, Karnataka, while the C295 FAL is being constructed in Vadodara, Gujarat. Additionally, major Indian airlines, including IndiGo and Air India, have placed orders for over 1,000 aircraft from Airbus, further solidifying the company’s position in the Indian market. As Airbus continues to expand its investments, it aims to enhance its engineering and digital capabilities in Bengaluru, contributing to the growth of India’s aerospace sector.
