Airbus and Air India Launch New Pilot Training Center in Gurugram
Airbus and Air India have officially launched a state-of-the-art pilot training center in Gurugram, Haryana, aimed at addressing the growing demand for pilots in India’s expanding aviation sector. The facility, inaugurated by India’s Minister of Civil Aviation, Rammohan Naidu Kinjarapu, is a joint venture that will train over 5,000 pilots in the next decade. Equipped with advanced simulators and classrooms, this center is set to enhance the quality of pilot training in the country.
Inauguration and Facility Details
The new pilot training center spans 12,000 square meters and features ten Full Flight Simulators (FFSs), along with modern classrooms and briefing rooms. The facility is specifically designed to train pilots for the Airbus A320 and A350 aircraft families. The courses offered at the center have received approval from both the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), ensuring that the training meets international standards. The inauguration event was attended by key figures, including Air India CEO Campbell Wilson and Airbus CEO of Commercial Aircraft Christian Scherer, highlighting the collaborative effort between the two organizations.
Supporting Air India’s Expansion
Air India is currently in a significant expansion phase, with an order for 570 new aircraft. The establishment of this pilot training center is a crucial part of Air India’s strategy to develop a skilled workforce that can support its growth ambitions. Campbell Wilson emphasized that this facility represents a major step in transforming Air India into a world-class airline. The training center will not only enhance pilot skills but also contribute to making the Indian aviation industry more self-reliant.
Strategic Investment in Indian Aviation
Airbus views this training center as a strategic investment in the future of the Indian aerospace industry. Jürgen Westermeier, President and Managing Director of Airbus India and South Asia, expressed pride in partnering with Air India and the Tata Group on this project. He noted that the facility is more than just a joint venture; it is a commitment to developing the aviation infrastructure necessary for India, which is recognized as one of the fastest-growing aviation markets globally.
Building a Comprehensive Aerospace Ecosystem
The Gurugram training center will complement the existing Airbus India Training Centre in New Delhi, which already houses four A320 Family FFSs. Together, these facilities will create a robust training network with a total of 14 FFSs. Airbus is also collaborating with local partners to provide maintenance training, ensuring a steady supply of technicians and engineers for the future fleet. This initiative is part of Airbus’s broader strategy to foster a comprehensive aerospace ecosystem in India, focusing on human capital development and partnerships with leading academic institutions. These efforts aim to equip the young workforce with the skills necessary to drive the growth of the aerospace industry in the coming decades.
