AI Innovations Take Center Stage at Healthcare Hackathon

The Federated Intelligence Hackathon for Healthcare has officially kicked off at the IIT Kanpur campus, a collaborative effort led by the National Health Authority (NHA), ICMR–National Institute for Research in Digital Health and Data Science (ICMR–NIRDHDS), and the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. This national initiative, which began on January 19, 2026, is focused on fostering secure and scalable artificial intelligence solutions tailored for India’s healthcare ecosystem.

A Week of Innovation

The Hackathon Week, running from January 19 to 23, 2026, involves intense technical development, mentoring, and evaluations, culminating in a two-day on-site program. The event, starting on January 23, will feature a gathering of policymakers, clinicians, researchers, startups, and industry experts engaged in expert sessions, presentations, and panel discussions.

Insights from Leaders in the Field

The opening keynote address was delivered by Prof. Sandeep Verma, Head of the Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology. He emphasized the critical nature of interdisciplinary research in fostering AI-enabled healthcare innovations. Prof. Verma stated that real advancement in health AI necessitates collaboration across various domains, integrating medicine, engineering, data science, and policy, to build sustainable healthcare systems for the future.

Technical sessions followed, led by Prof. Phaneendra Kumar Yalavarthy from TANUH, IISc Bengaluru. His insights focused on the transition from traditional machine learning to data-driven approaches in healthcare. “AI in healthcare has progressed from rule-based systems to advanced deep learning, which can autonomously discover features crucial for complex tasks such as medical image segmentation,” he noted.

Emerging Opportunities and Expert Discussions

A standout feature of the program was a live Health AI demonstration presented by Google Health AI and the Wadhwani Foundation, led by Manish Kumar. Panel discussions included key topics such as Health Technology Assessment (HTA) and data sourcing for Health AI within India, featuring experts from government, industry, and academia, including representatives from Samsung India and NITI Aayog. The panelists concentrated on pivotal issues such as validation pathways, regulatory requirements, and the standardization of data for extensive deployment of AI tools in public health.

Participation and Future Steps

The hackathon has attracted significant interest, with a total of 191 registrations comprising 76 individual participants and 115 teams. This level of engagement reflects the robust participation from health-tech startups, AI/ML researchers, clinicians, and medical institutions across the nation. This collaborative effort aims to enhance the readiness of data, validation frameworks, and the clinical applicability of Health AI tools.

Offering a prize pool of ₹12 lakh, the event’s concluding activities will take place on January 23-24, 2026, featuring discussions that target foundational challenges in validating Health AI at scale. These sessions will cover policy-level considerations, responsible AI frameworks, and presentations from the top-performing teams, along with the announcement of hackathon winners and certificate handovers.
