Agnikul Cosmos Launches Testing and Manufacturing Facilities in Chennai for Reusable Rocket Stage Validation
NEW DELHI: Indian space startup Agnikul Cosmos has launched two new assembly and testing facilities in Chennai, marking a significant advancement in reusable launch vehicle technology. The newly inaugurated Stage Testing & Inspection Facility (STIF) and the Pressurant Tank Realisation, Over-wrapping and Outfitting Facility (PROOF) were unveiled in the presence of Group Captain and Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla.
STIF is designed for testing reusable rocket stages under conditions that simulate actual flight. It supports thrust levels ranging from 1 kN to 200 kN and can perform full-duration burns of up to 150 seconds. The facility will also facilitate post-flight inspections and requalification of recovered stages, enhancing the company’s capabilities in reusable technology.
PROOF will enable Agnikul to manufacture pressure vessels in-house, which are essential for holding gases or liquids under varying pressures. This facility is capable of producing over 10 vessels per month, including those with capacities up to 3,500 litres and pressures of 350 bar.
Srinath Ravichandran, co-founder and CEO of Agnikul Cosmos, emphasized the importance of these facilities in achieving their vision of reusability. He stated that STIF allows for comprehensive testing and inspection of rocket stages, which is crucial as the company prepares for its upcoming Mission-02. Group Captain Shukla remarked on the exciting developments within India’s space program, noting Agnikul’s expansion in advanced manufacturing and testing capabilities.
Headquartered in Chennai and incubated at IIT Madras, Agnikul Cosmos specializes in the Agnibaan family of configurable small-lift launch vehicles. The company successfully conducted its Mission 01, Agnibaan SOrTeD, in May 2024 from its privately built launchpad at Sriharikota. Agnikul also designs and manufactures its single-piece, 3D-printed semi-cryogenic engines and develops its avionics and propulsion systems in-house.
