‘Shoorveer’ Copyright Dispute Resolved: Trouper Records Secures Official License for Mirzapur: The Movie

The controversy surrounding the use of Rajasthani rapper Rapperiya Baalam’s song “Shoorveer” in Mirzapur: The Movie has been addressed following a statement from the track’s label, Trouper Records. The label confirmed that the song was officially licensed to Excel Entertainment for inclusion in the film. This clarification comes after Rapperiya Baalam expressed concerns about the song’s use in a sequence featuring gangsters, alleging that it was included without his permission or proper credit.

Trouper Records Confirms Official Licensing

Amid the questions regarding copyright and song usage, Trouper Records has put the matter to rest by confirming that the track was legally licensed for in-film use in Mirzapur: The Movie. The label congratulated the film’s team, effectively addressing the key issue raised about the song’s legal clearance for inclusion in the project.

Rapperiya Baalam had previously voiced his disappointment on social media after the film’s theatrical release on September 4. He questioned the permission process, stating, “Today, my heart is broken. Some of you may ask why my heart is broken. You might say I should be happy because my song is in Mirzapur. But the Mirzapur team did not take my permission to use my song. Who gave them the permission? I certainly did not.”

Artist’s Concerns Over Context and Collaboration

The rapper also expressed concerns about the context in which his song was used, noting, “This song is dedicated to Maharana Pratap ji. We are using this song to glorify the villains in the movie. Is this right?” He emphasized that he would have welcomed a collaboration if the filmmakers had approached him directly. “If the Mirzapur team had approached me and said, ‘Rapperiya bhai, we want to use your song,’ we would have given them 10 ideas. But taking the song without permission is not right,” he stated.

With Trouper Records confirming the official licensing, the copyright and licensing aspect of the controversy has been clarified. Directed by Gurmeet Singh and written by Puneet Krishna, Mirzapur: The Movie brings the popular crime franchise from the streaming space to the big screen.
