New Flights Enhance Connectivity in Manipur

The Union Minister for Civil Aviation, Sh. Rammohan Naidu, recently announced the launch of new flights connecting Imphal, the capital of Manipur, to major cities like Kolkata and Guwahati. This initiative aims to improve air travel options for residents and boost the local economy. The Chief Minister of Manipur, Sh. N. Biren Singh, joined the minister in flagging off these flights, which include two new routes and an additional service to Dimapur. This development is part of a broader strategy to enhance connectivity in the North East region of India.

New Routes to Boost Connectivity

The newly launched flights will connect Imphal to Kolkata and Guwahati, providing residents with more travel options. These routes are expected to significantly improve connectivity for both business and leisure travelers. The flights will operate under the Viability Gap Funding (VGF) scheme, a joint effort between the Ministry of Civil Aviation and the Manipur State Government. This funding model aims to make air travel more accessible and economically viable for airlines operating in less populated regions.

The introduction of these flights is a crucial step in enhancing the overall transportation network in Manipur. It will not only facilitate easier travel for locals but also attract tourists and investors to the region. Improved air connectivity can lead to increased trade and tourism, which are vital for the economic development of Manipur. The state government is optimistic that these new routes will create job opportunities and foster a more robust investment ecosystem.

Government Commitment to North East Development

During the flag-off ceremony, Minister Rammohan Naidu emphasized the central government’s commitment to the development of the North East. He highlighted the mantra of “Act East, Act Fast, Act First,” which aims to bring the growth of this region in line with the rest of the country. The minister expressed confidence that the new flights would enhance the state’s trade, travel, and tourism sectors, ultimately leading to economic growth and empowerment for the youth of Manipur.

Naidu credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the progress in the North East, particularly through initiatives like the UDAN scheme. This scheme aims to make air travel affordable and widespread, ensuring that even remote areas have access to air services. The minister also mentioned a Master Plan 2047, which outlines future developments for airports in the North East, including Imphal Airport. This plan is expected to bring systemic improvements and better infrastructure to the region.

Local Leaders Praise New Initiatives

Chief Minister N. Biren Singh expressed gratitude to the Union Government and the Civil Aviation Minister for their support in enhancing aerial connectivity for Manipur. He acknowledged the importance of these new flights in providing better travel options for the people. Singh also praised Alliance Air for offering multiple flight timings, which will improve convenience for travelers.

The Chief Minister assured that the state government would fully support upcoming air connectivity projects. He noted that since the launch of the UDAN scheme, significant progress has been made in the region, with ten airports and two heliports now operational. This development is a testament to the government’s commitment to improving transportation infrastructure in Manipur and the surrounding areas.
