Amit Shah chaired the meeting of the North Eastern Space Applications Centre
Advancements in Space Technology for Northeast India
Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently chaired the 12th meeting of the North Eastern Space Applications Centre (NESAC) Society in Agartala, Tripura. This meeting brought together key figures from the Indian government and the northeastern states. Among the attendees were Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, Chief Ministers from various northeastern states, and senior officials from the Central and State Governments. The meeting focused on enhancing the role of space technology in the development of the northeastern region.
A Leap Forward in Space Technology
During his address, Amit Shah highlighted the significant advancements in Indiaโs space sector over the past decade. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s leadership, the country has made remarkable progress. Shah noted that after 25 years since the establishment of the NESAC Society, the positive impacts of its work are becoming evident. He emphasized the need for the NESAC Society to broaden its scope of work across the northeastern states. He urged state governments to take proactive steps to support these initiatives.
Shah’s vision includes fostering a new generation of scientists and engineers in the region. He proposed that the NESAC Society should take 100 science students from each northeastern state to visit the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) headquarters. This initiative aims to spark interest in space and related technologies among young minds. He also called on the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region to fund 60 percent of this project. Furthermore, he encouraged state governments to introduce new courses in space technology at engineering colleges.
Infrastructure Development and Resource Mapping
Shah discussed the importance of infrastructure development in the northeastern states. He mentioned that NESAC has already facilitated the construction of 20 waterways. He urged the Society to explore the potential for building additional waterways to enhance connectivity and economic growth. Additionally, he stressed the need for comprehensive mapping of mineral, oil, and coal reserves in the region. This mapping could lead to significant financial benefits for the states through royalties from these resources.
The Union Home Minister also addressed border security issues. He highlighted the necessity of mapping demographic data along the India-Myanmar border, particularly in Nagaland, Mizoram, and Manipur. This data will assist in better fencing of the border and help curb infiltration. To achieve this, he called for a thorough survey of the border areas, which would provide crucial information for effective border management.
Environmental Monitoring and Disaster Management
In his address, Amit Shah emphasized the role of space technology in environmental monitoring and disaster management. He urged the NESAC Society to focus on forest area development using satellite imagery. By comparing historical maps with current ones, the Society can identify areas suitable for reforestation. Collaborating with state governments, they can implement tree-planting initiatives to enhance the region’s green cover.
Shah also pointed out the importance of mapping flood-prone areas in the northeastern states. Accurate flood mapping can help in disaster preparedness and response, ultimately saving lives and property. He praised the NESAC Society for its effective use of space technology in administration and encouraged its continued application in the challenging geographical landscape of the Northeast.
Future Directions for NESAC Society
Amit Shah concluded his address by commending the NESAC Society for its positive contributions to the region. He emphasized the need for the Society to develop a sustainable revenue model to support its initiatives. The focus should remain on leveraging space technology for the development of the northeastern states. By doing so, the NESAC Society can play a pivotal role in transforming the region’s socio-economic landscape.
The meeting in Agartala marks a significant step towards integrating space technology into various sectors in the Northeast. With the right support and initiatives, the region can harness the full potential of space applications for sustainable development and improved quality of life for its residents.
